Talking Tek 3 remap

I suppose many of you will have had your cars 're-mapped' but how many informed your insurance companies?

Should I bother if and when I have it done or just not tell them?

And if you did tell them did your premium go up with a bump?

Question is open to anyone who has had a remap, not just those of you who have had a tek 3 ecu upgrade. : )

Simple answer. You are required to inform your insurance company. If you don't, subsequently make a claim and they discover that your car has been remapped they are entitled to cancel your policy and refuse to pay out! Some would argue that they are unlikely to check in the even of a claim, but can you afford to risk it? My advice would be, accept that if you wan't to play, you have to pay. How much depends on who you are insured with!

You might be surprised by how little it increases.....Elephant seem to be very reasonable about mods at the moment.

NS04 is right...somethings you might risk, like a little tarty something or a replaced centre exhaust section, but something as big as a remap, i'd declare it

If there are no outward signs that it has been done, you may be able to get away with it. But, like the others have said, they are likely not to pay out in the event of a crash if they detect what you have done.

Remaps can really increase the power, and therefore also your premiums

How clued up are they though?

If you have a minor prang are they going to start having a look at the ECU?

And does anyone think I might get away with telling them that its been mapped for a different type of fuel (optimax or BP for example)?

They are proper clued up, how else would they always find a way to screw the public....

I'd guess that if you've had a remap, you've probably got a upgraded exhaust system, most probably a full decat?? Anyone is gonna spot the lack of a cat with just a quick glance, after which they are going to make a point of checking every last little thing...any excuse not to pay out. Don't put it past them to inform police as well if they decide that you were uninsured.
I really would declare such a power increase, depending on the insurerer i think you will be surprised

It has been mentioned may times that a decat would voild the insurance any way as it makes the car un road worthy as it would not pass a MOT

not sure on this but worth thinking about

With NU direct & have 'exhaust modification' & 18" wheels ... no problem.

But just got quote for £880 from elsewhere on an STi5 to cover up to 400 BHP A route I am seriously interested in pursuing .... no restriction on mods as long as power not exceeded!

Try Keith Michaels on 0870 845 3333

Just been quoted £818 for fully comp (31, 5yrs protected NCB) on an MY99 STI Type R with Tek3, performance exhaust, GGR induction kit, and suspension mods.

Just need to find/buy one now and mod it up.

BTW, they're pretty knowledgable about Scooby tuning too. When I was getting my quote I mentioned getting a Tek3 remap and the bloke said "oh who's doing that for you, Bob Rawle?".

If your over 30 years old try Liverpool & Victoria.
When i modded my Scoob with a tek3 etc i went over to them. For £600 a year my policy allows me to do any modification to the car i like, taking it to any Bhp i like without having to notify them of any changes to the car whatsoever.
They only want to be notified if there's a change to the cubic capacity of the engine...ie...i put a 2.5 litre block in.

Liverpool and Victoria were by far the best deal around for me. But as i say, i believe you have to be over 30 years old to insure with them.

smurfy.

When was the last time you tried L&V for a quote?

I tried them last week (had 2 scoobys insured through them before) and as soon as the words 'import' or 'modified' were mentioned they refused to even quote me. The salesman told me that L&V were not interested in the Jap Import / Modified markets these days.

Which is why I tried Keith Michaels from a recommendation on here.

i had my scoob insured with L&V and they would not take a exhaust mod. I have now cancelled and have a policy with nig which i got for £150 less than l&v with the exhaust mod
