Insuring a young 'un, (not in a scoob!)
Hi, can anyone point me in the direction of insurance companies that might give me a reasonable quote for an 18 yr old lad, (19 in May), passed his test last April, driving a 1.4 Seat Ibiza.
Insurance has been in my name up to now, but I want him to build up some ncd, and we're not happy with the present insurers, CIS.
So far I've had quotes ranging around £1600, but I've also been "quoted happy" at £2500 Norwich fekkin Union!
Given the amount of data you have to input before a quote comes up, and the number of companies out there, can anyone point me in the right direction to save me a bit of time?
TIA.

several companies don't mention pass plus discounts and these include norwich union privilege direct line and tesco and the discount can be around 30% so you will need to telephone them.
some sites which do mention pass plus and give a discount for it are motorquotedirect direct choice and quotelinedirect.
quoteline direct can offer policies for 6 or 8 months with one year ncd provided you take out the next policy for 12 months with the same company ie you cannot change to another company when the 6 or 8 month policy finishes.
dont forget to include mum and/or the girl friend/this normally reduces it by at least 10%
hope this helps

Hi,
I was with CIS and did the any driver policy for the first three years of driving to be honest all insurance will be high until he is atleast 20. I found the CIS way was the cheapest.
If you really want him to go on his own, I would highly recommend elephant.co.uk I am with them now and they blew every other quote out of the water. I have no no claims of my own by the way but have a clean liscence. (just make sure when getting a quote mum is a named driver or who ever has the cleaner liscence, also keep the annual milage down to a minimum as it reduces the risk of an accident)
#Pass plus is only valid for the first two years of driving and cannot be taken if you have been driving for longer than 1 year.
Good luck an happy shopping, kind regards
Nic.

Have you tried Liverpool & Victoria?
This is my combination. Daughter 18 passed test. Son 17 learning.
Ford Ka 1.3 + 205 1.7 TD. Currently in my name. Quite reasonable rate for them as named drivers but when I asked about insuring them as main drivers (which is what you want to do) it was around £1000 for the 205 and £1200 for the Ka. A bit odd as the turbo diesel is much faster than the Ka. Know what you mean about building up ncd but I'm going to leave it for as long as I can hoping that as they get older the initial premium will be lower. DL

Chris Knotts, no doubt about it.
I was in a similar situation as you (18, quickish car 205gti), tried a LOT of people and they were waaaaaaay cheaper than anyone else.
Oh as well, quick tip: If they give you a quote of, say, £1000, tell them you got another quote off xxx for £900 and the guy will speak to the underwriter who will probably say they can beat it and then quote say £880. I tried this blag and saved myself £240. Basically they are targetting young drivers so they really want your business as apposed to others who see young drivers as liabilities.

When I was 18 had a Fiat Seicento 1.1 sporting and paid around £1100 fully comp, afraid it's a case of biting the bullet really,
I'm 24 now and driving an Import MY94 STi so there's something to be said for building up no claims young!
P.S I was insured with Tesco's
