L&V are much cheaper then all! im 19 and it is £700 on my second car which is a Astra Mk3 1.6 8v (more Torque'y than a 16V which pull all the way up the rev range!)
i have been driving for 1 1/2years!
hope this helps

dream weaver, that isnt helping the lad is it!
Try elephant, and hope it all works out, but it will be costly. I was/am expecting to pay £1300 for a rover 216 coupe:S Make sure he gets the insurance sorted before he buys the car, or he could find himself selling it through lack of cash!

Norwich union? Was good for me anyway.
Get Limited mileage/tracker/cat 1 alarm etc. etc., then there's a lot better chance.

IMHO my advice is the best - I cant understand 19 year olds paying £2-3k just on insurance. That sort of money could go into buying clothes, nights out, gadgets, learning, or even a small business venture.
Better at that age to be enjoying yourself, not having all your cash tied up in a car. Its no fun running a car you cant really afford.
Of course he could be minted, but my golden rule has always been maximum insurance spend £1k a year and i've stuck to it.
I had a knacked MG Metro at 17
Metro at 17, not 19

Dream weaver your true to a point, but if you love cars you love cars. As for spending money on nights out etc is such a waste of money. Fair enough, dont sacrfice everythink for your motor, but the worst feeling is when you look back and realise you wasted all your money, such as myself last year ( wasted cash on kebabs and nights out and cough cough the odd hooker
As for spending 2-3k on insurance, its too much agreed, dont let them steal your cash, unless your minted.
as for you awesome opening line to your reply.. "my advice is the best.."awesome, like your modesty, and im not taking the ****!

Confused.com is a search portal type thing, you put in the details and it seraches all the online ones, and for some reason comes back with reallyc competitive prices, I got some dastically lower prices using that website.
I'd have to agree about the choice of car and age. Fair play I considered a classic Porsche at 20, I can understand the impatience, but as someone said spending more than 1500 on insuranace, really starts to get a bit silly even if you're loaded their are better uses for that money.
I'd prolly do something like get the Citroen C2 GT rally thing, it's not fantastic, but it's a good fun, fairly capable mini-hatch, but most importantly it has free insurance for a year. I would be tempted to do that once he has that vital first years ncb which he will of got free then give the thing back to citeroen and move up to something more focused.

hey dream weaver id sooner spend £3000 grand on insurance rather than go out and put up with CHAV's trying to start a fight everwhere you go even if you try to stay away from the chav places the only other options are pretentious bars. If the guy gets more fun out of driving a bigger car than an MG Metro or going out with chavs good on him!
what on earth are you doing buying metros : nearly as bad as micra drivers lol
for that kind of money why doesnt he just buy a scoob

Tell him to sell it and get something more appropriate for a 19 year old

19 year olds can sometimes be better than older drivers. Just cos you are older doesnt mean you are better all the time

The point is not about who is better, i'm just trying to instill some wise old knowledge in there.
At 19, why bother spending £3k on insurance, and loads on a car when you should be out enjoying yourself, which doesnt have to mean fighting with Chavs Go travelling, go away at weekends, out for meals, BBQ's etc - I just sound like an old **** now
Anyway, as said thats not helping, and we all make our own choices.
Re insurance, try HIC - they were no good for me, but cheap for lots others. Good with mods as well. Also try LV
PS Laggamorph, I was 17 when I had the Metro, 14 years back, so MG Metro's were pretty cool back then - it was only 6 years old, bought from auction for £800 - big ends had gone

Yeah, positive, I did forget to mention that i'm on my mum's insurance, but it is only £1500. Which I thought was pretty good! I would think FTO's would be cheaper to insure?
