Default 18 year old & WRX

Hi guys, just registered and this is my first post so go easy on me!

I live in Cheshire (South Warrington to be precise) and my dad owns a 2003 WRX. I was just wondering if it would be at all possible for me to added as named driver to his insurance at a non-too outrageous price? He and my mum are insured already on it and I believe he's on Norwich Union, but I'm not sure. He has no mods done to it, it's the stock ~225hp car. My birthday is on the 27th of April (turn 18) and this is what I want as my present - don't want anything else! - even being insured for just a month would be superb.

Bung your's, your ma and pa's details in on NU's website and see what it says... If it's not too outrageous (which I have a feeling it will be...) then ring 'em up.

I was a named driver on my mum's car (OK, it is a Ford Ka), but when it came round to my brother learning to drive, the wanted an extortionate amount to add him on, but the nice lady on the phone told my mum that my bro could be added for 90 days free a year (not consecutive I don't think), and all we had to do was phone them and let them know when. I can't remember what insurance company it was, but it may be worth a call to see if that's a possibility?

I'm sure they will do it, but it will be at a high price. That should be ok....it's your 18th after all

Thanks for the replies guys, it's a great set-up you've all got here.

I'll talk it over tonight with my Dad (his birthday today so he should be in good spirits) and then if he goes ahead with it I'll give you the quote given here. Here's to hoping - if I can't get on it I'll get motorbike lessons; I think my Mum would rather I was insured on the Scooby!

Ask them about Life Insurance whilst you're on the phone

Seriously, being a "named driver" doesn't magically hide you from a sky high premium as insurers will just look at the highest risk driver on the policy and base the premium on that. Have you done PassPlus or Advanced Motorists, anything that will ease the fear of the underwriter?

Maybe also try some of the specialist insurers who advertise in the back of the modifying comics (eg. Max Power).

Finally, good luck, wish I had the chance to drive a WRX!

Hehe, yeah, for sure it'll be interesting to see what the quotes will be..... Dad said he'd give them a ring and see what they say, arr I just really want to drive it! I put all the details into Confused.com and only two insurance companies bothered to give a quote back - one was for £9500 ( ) and the other was around £1000, which thankfully was for Budget/Norwhich Union. I think Dad pays about £800 full comp. at the moment, so I will have to see how it all goes when we phone them about it.

My sister had something similar to what BexTait said, where she was insured for 30 days on a car and the price was really small...... if Norwich Union do that then even that would be great. I will find out by Tuesday if I'm allowed on it.

If I can't do it there's always later on in life to drive a Scooby.

Think you'll find NU will need you to be at least 25, even just for named drivers.
NU Direct do for sure, doubt its different through a broker either.

LOL I like the 'barter with motorbike lessons' strategy

Personally I'd ask for a 2nd hand raspy moped - either that or insurance on the scoob

LOL but as above I'll be surprised if NU do under 25's on your dad's policy

They can put you on for a month no worries. CIS Insurance will do this for you if needed and you are stuck.

Just becareful in it. Im 19 now and pay a fortune. Especially as mine is mildly modified.

Not being funny(or PC)but I highly suggest u get membership to a local karting club for a year instead..................it'll be cheaper, good fun, doesn't matter if u crash and most importantly,it'll teach u some car control.
I"m not trying to be ageist.I do know a couple of young guys that could teach me a thing or two on the driving front, but if u ain't a got alot of driving skill I think this would be a better option.

my94, I used to race karts at MSA level for about 6 or 7 years and just stopped recently, so I understand what you mean about gaining experience and control the cheaper way.

Dad's changing from NU in two weeks anyway, so I'll be added when he goes to the new people whoever they are.

Thank you for the kind comments, if I'm not driving right now then hopefully I'll be posting here in a few years time in the mods forum, with my own STi10 or whatever.
