Insurance cover for new vehicle

Insurance cover for new vehicle
I am going to look at a couple of cars today, my policy covers me to drive other peoples cars on a third party only basis, the car is for my son. If I buy a car for him does my policy cover me to drive it home or does it have to be insured in someone else's name for my policy to cover it?
The problem I have is that my son is not 17 yet. However, my brother in law had an accident last weekend, he crashed his car in to a roundabout late at night and had no phone signal so had to walk back to where he was staying. The police had spotted his car and arrange for it to be towed away. They then turned up at his doorstep and said they were considering doing him for undue care and attention, and leaving the scene of an accident (he didn't hit anyone else, or any street furniture) so my wife suggested buying the car for my son but letting her brother use the car in the meantime until he knew what was going on with the police, and insurance payout etc, so can't take out a policy in my sons name just yet.
