What components
I'm after a set of components in replace the fronts. I've read a really good review of a Jensen 5 inch set at just £69.99. I just seem to be having problems finding them. Before I search high and low will they fit straight in or will I have to make a braacket or frame for them. Any other suggestions or opinions for a good set of components would be most appreciated. I read an earlier post on some sony 6.5 inch which looked good but can't find a price for them even under the new model. I need better sounds some lots of suggestions please, ideally ones where I don't have to do anything apart from wiring, cheers all.

At the risk of stating the obvious . . . Infinity 605cs are one of the most common upgrades to the Scoobys fronts. Fit straight in no problems and are a good quality speaker for the cash

I just fited some smaller Infinty speakers in the rear shelf, can't remember the model. Pretty much anything will fit in the back if you take off the metal bit on the shelf that they drop into. I chose a pair of similar specs to balance the sound a bit, just slightly more powerful that the fronts.
Some say, do without the rears for sounstage reasons, and just fit a sub, remove the rears and replace the grills for airflow to the boot.
By the way,we are talking about <01 aren't we

I've just put some of the 605s in my MY02 STi. I had to make a 12mm mdf collar to stop the speaker hitting the window, but otherwise they fit fine. Ordered them from MCS, and they arrived next day

Iain,
I'm looking at doing the same with my STI - have you changed the head unit too - How much better do they sound than the crud thats standard?
What do you mean by making the MDF collar? Get some MDF and cut a disc out? Sorry ICE novice!

Dunk/Chiark,
Do those Infinity's come with some cross-over thingy?? (you can tell I'm an ICE expert, obviously
)
Where do you put it and how do you wire it into an existing system?
I've an Alpine HU, but it just uses the standard ISO connectors. Do I need to re-wire for these speakers?
Cheers,
Stefan

Rich,
Yes I've changed the head unit as well (to a Pioneer DEH-P8400MP). Makes a world of difference (better tuner, much clearer sound, fancy displays etc) and means I can now listen to MP3 / WMA cds as well
You're correct about the mdf collar. I just basically cut out a ring (not round, but the shape of the original speaker mounting) with a round hole in the middle, to drop the new speaker into. Just has the effect of lifting the speaker those extra few mm away from the window.
Note : remember to wear a mask when cutting mdf as the dust is nasty stuff (can cause similar side effects as asbestos)
Cheers,
Iain

They do come with a crossover. I have one mounted in the passenger footwell and one under the dash one the drivers side, haven't had any problems with interference. They can also be mounted behind the door card with suitable protection. Behind the door card is the easier option as you will not have to try and poke 3 runs of wire through the door grommets and peel your hands (like I did
). But, lets not get into another washing-up liquid debate
I would recommend running a new thicker guage wire from the headunit to the crossover too, as the original one is pants
Should you wish to mount the tweeters like mine, then just run the wire up the door (behind the card) and pop it out behind the little triangle plastic thingy. Easy

If you follow chiarks faq (on http://www.chiark.com) it explains the process very well. The door looks slightly different than the pictures (especially around the window controls) but the process is the same. Basically....
1. Undo screw in the bottom of the small pocket behind the window controls.
2. Remove window control panel (lift up from the back).
3. Undo the screw that is exposed by removing this panel
4. Pull off the black plastic triangle covering the wing mirror electrics etc.
5. Pull the door panel away, starting in the bottom-back corner, (note that on my STi the clips were very stiff and needed a good hard tug.
6. Lift panel upwards and off.
7. Refit in reverse order
Simple really

Dunk,
Please bare with me, I'm an idiot

You mentioned a new run of higher-quality cable to the speakers (which makes perfect sense), but how do you connect this into the Headunit? Does my Headunit need phono connectors or are you using some adapter for the ISO connector.
