really p1$$ me off. Has anyone ever, anywhere, actualy fitted a set of focal 6.5s without having to make door builds? These speakers have wide baskets, are reasonably deep and the cone excursion and rubber surround really need a lot of room to work in. By this I mean the mdf collar has been planed down to about 6mm at the top, and the things are still touching the top of the door panels when put in place. The clearance at he rear is down to about 3mm, so can't really go much further.

What 6.5 speakers have people put in their imprezaS (besides 605 infintys) and cost getting on for £200 quid? At this point I'm considering going down a size to the 5 3/8 which would still need a collar, but would have no probs in clearance.

Any help/advice would be appreciated as I've put 5 1/4 in my old bm, 6.5 in a golf and neither of them caused me the hassle that this is.

Cheers

I had Infinity Kappa 65.3 components, these were 6.5" sepakers as opposed to the 6" 605cs. I didn't have any trouble installing them, used a spacer made of 18mm MDF and fitting was a breeze. Sounds like your Focals are much deeper.

Steve.

presumably you did away with the plastic mounting a used the mdf screwed onto the door? The problem I have is the door panel slopes in at the top and touches the speaker there, else where its fine.

I put Polk Audio's 6.5 in the front. It did take a bit of time and patience to get them in. Removed the plastic standard collar jobbie, and replaced with 2 half inch mdf collards (didn't have 1 inch thick mdf on me). I also stuck a small rubber grommit onto the outside of the speaker to allow room for the speaker to vibrate when the door trim was back on.

did you just cut a few bits to screw onto the doors, then mount the speaker on those? As the diameter of the speaker is greater than the area allowed for a full circle to sit flush on the door (as it comes in at the top right) did you cut it into bits or plane away a bit? incidently, how deep are the polks?

Okey... I don't know if MY99 and 98 is the same but I had a pair of Sony XS-HF78 6.5" installed in my frontdoor with any trouble at all.

I had a pair of focals in my old MY00 turbo, and they were an **** to fit, (much deeper than the originals). Basically I ended up using 12mm (I think) mdf at the top, and glued an extra (6mm) bit around the bottom (so it was 12mm at the top and 18mm at the bottom and the speaker was at an angle). Seemed to work ok.

lucky git! Cant believe they fit that well. The focals Ive got must be the biggest yet as the spacer has been planed down to about 6mm at the top (12 ish at the bottom) and the edge of the speaker definately touches the door panel.

The rim of the focals is much greater than the width of the plastic mounts; the screw holes are about 5mm wider than those on the original. I see you've drilled three holes to match those of the original speaker - there's no way I could do that as it would mean drilling into the speaker itself!!

My CD technologies are pretty big - sitting on a 12mm mdf collar that's larger than the original pod too. I made it out of 2 6mm mdf collars to provide more width.

I think they *should* go in.

Failing that, give 'em to me. (It's my standard answer)

twinny - are you sure those are 6.5"? The diameter of the focals are way wider than the plastic mount.

I'm very sure.. You can have a look at Sony's website here: http://www.xplodsony.com/products/?C...s&MD=XS-HF600G .. This is the same product only with a new name. It was called XS-HF78 in 2001.

I had a pair of the 6.5" Focals. I had to make a MDF spacer to mount them to, but there was no problems with them touching the door skin. Couldn't completely lower the window, though - it whacked the magnet. As far as I remember, the spacers were straight disks (flat, same thickness all the way round).
Anyone who hasn't actually seen a pair of Focals, don't even bother offering the opinion 'my XXX are fairly large and they fit OK' - these things are ridiculous
Be happy that you don't have a pair of 7" Dynaudios, and tweeters that don't fit under the door release panel (or anywhere else). They really are being a bit of a handful

Thank fu&K for that, it has confirmed my findings. these *******s are not going to fit in unless i make do with a window that doesn't go all the way down or re build the door panel.

I was getting a bit miffed at the 'just make a collar and it'll drop in' response. unless you have actually got some of this kit then it is unlikely you'll appreciate how much it is pi$$ing me off!!!

Changing speakers or sorting problem tomorrow, either way, there's no way i'm driving to work on monday with two ****e rears and not tunes from the front.

Question

Fine, you get miffed at people trying to help.

Are you saying that there's no way of fitting these in an impreza without cutting metal or door skin?

People are trying to help out here...

I think you guys got the wrong end of the stick there, don't get me wrong - I fully appreciate the advice given on this forum. The last post was light hearted, so if you took it the wrong way, then its a shame feeligs acn't be expressed better on the web!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

Problem all sorted now, opted for the slightly smaller 5 1/2. Incidentally, there's nothing wrong with 605, or any infinity speaker - had some in my last car.

So no one need get upset now....

Chiark - well, there is a way of fitting them in, but not if you want your windows to go all the way down! The magnet is almost the same diameter as the cone, and I'd guess at 10cm back? Haven't got one in front of me to say...
They are the largest, AFAIK and AFA 'The Sound Gallery' knows as well, and they have some seriously serious kit in there & seen most of everything too. They didn't believe me when I first told them either...

Door builds are really the only option for these, and I'm open to offers on mine (both the builds and the Dyns!).
