Question

I have £300 to spend on a headunit.

I can get a Kenwood 9090 Mask Cd player for that which has 4.5v pre out etc etc.

Can any recommend any alternatives??

This is to go with my diamond front end, diamond sub, and dls amp.

Cheers

9090 has a fancy DAC that is supposed to be better. Other than that if your are not having noise problems there is probably little advantage using the higher voltage preouts. But the 8090 and 9090 do have some nice integral filters that you can play with and a nice display.

Alpine - also decent stuff - sounds ok in my car.

The new Kenwood MP3 headunit - pretty good too.

Yes, the kenwood System E+ is pretty smart - it's on my head unit too. Allows you to put a high pass filter on the front output (or speakers) independently to another HPF on the rear output (or speakers)

For my money, I'd spend an extra 17 quid (at edworthys at least) and buy the PS9590R. Gives you the enhanced cd-audio circuitry (D.R.I.V.E), and, most importantly to me, 3 RCA pre-outs for complete system flexibility.

3 RCAs may not be what you need now, but if your system grows...

Nick.

Just installed the kenwood MP3 player myself and its ace. Powerfull too, its got 47Wx4. Go get it and RIP and BURN your own compilations. You can get about 150 songs on an 80 min cd.

Had (yes had...) a Kenwood Tuner CD Mask unit - I did find the buttons way too small on it. Painful to try and change a disk without feeling you should pull over... Didn't want a changer as that is just one more thing to be nicked.

Sounded fab though.

I just got a Sony CDX M670 for £260 from http://www.worldrallying.com which would come under your £300. It is great, turned up the next day as well! Got it running into an Alpine active crossover and two alpine amps running ground zero front components and an old 12" Jensen sub in a home made ported enclosure, sounds better than my mates system which cost him 3 times as much :-) quality not quantity!
