advice needed for an ice novice... just bought a totally standard my00, and in need of a half decent ice system. First question is can I simply attach a CD changer to the standard scooby (phillips????) cassette/radio thing?

Second bit is are the speakers (30w I think) up to much, or will these need replacing? Not really looking for a huge Db type system, just something that will sound very good!

sadly you won't get "sound very good" using the factory kit.

Talking

Most people change the headunit and add front component speakers as a minimum with a view to adding an amp and possibly a sub later. You will notice a moderate improvement on changing the headunit or the front speakers on their own initially and a bigger difference when you change both. Rear speakers are also poor but the accoustics of the car mean you don't hear much improvement by upgrading them, unless you want to consider back seat passengers perhaps.

Try the ice faq, and specifically section 2
