Focals will see you right.

I run CD technologies and they take all punishment that I throw at them with ease too - though I'm running the HD62s, which are a fairly serious driver...

Question

OK open to sugestions on this one.

I have a Phoenix Gold ZX450 amp currently running Boston Pro 5" speakers with tweeters at the front they sound "empty"

I suspect this is due to lack of ability to produce any base?

So I'm looking for some 6" speakers with tweeters and passive X-over (but open to other suggestions), with enough power handling ability to allow me to wind them up when the mood takes me.

I'm going to run the other 2 channels bridged (?) to a sub in the boot which I can remove before track event type stuff but think I may have that sorted already (maybe)? Adam?

Adam M (who is quite knowledgeable in this area), suggested Focals but has not yet come back to me with specifics????

How much did you pay for the CD Techs? - I have been quoted a price of £600 which I thought a tad pricey!

Rockfords can take serious abuse... American amps are usually rated using IASCA ratings.. considerablly lower and underrated... look at RMS ratings on a birth certificate of a punch 60...

I have two sets of rockfords for the scoob. and early experiments are good...

fk me Steve, definitely pricey! That'd be the three way HD642 config, I guess, which would be a swine to fit in the Impreza...

I paid just over 200 quid landed as I bought from the factory direct. The drivers are notionally b-stock - there's a small scratch on the coating, but they're guaranteed acoustically identical (if that's possible ) to the standard units.

They were "fun" to fit, but definitely worth it. A friend is running off 150wpc xtant kit, and has yet to hear them bottom out...

Mike

I have Focal 165Ks

The 165K2 won't fit due to the depth of the magnet

The are very detailed - perhaps "bright" but I enjoy them

I daresay that ultimate midrange punch is going to be limited by vibrations in the front doors

Need a good foaming and dynamatting of course

Thumbs up

Thanks for all the input, (pun intended) , Yes Adam, come on speak up?

Focal seems to be creeping ahead? will the K2 Focals fit with a spacer behind them? don't mind a bit of fiddling if the K2 is better than the K (?).

Mike

I can't answer that one for sure

The might end up tight on the grills.

You could always just no tuse the front windows or get dentmaster to put a wee bulge in the door to accomodate them

I haven't heard them either - so really no help whatsoever

Scooby Doc

I have 6.5 inch Dyn's in my car - cost £400

However I'm waiting for a new speaker as one broke - bad design I'm afraid

They cant take that much power and are not at all bas'y - I would not recommond them

I may change them very soon! - just did'nt want to fork out so much money. Heard some 'cheap' MB Quartz that were amped up pretty high - they were about £100 and sounded better than mine - yes I was miffed!

Thats interesting what you say about the dyns Steve

Its disappointing when you spend that much and they not aonly fall part but don't perform

I take it that it is not a drop off in quality related to the problems with the cone

I was listening to Love over Gold in the car on the way to work - the main reason is I have the album on LP and CD and can therefore compare my record deck with my cd player at home and with the nakamichi in the car. The car is a long way off the home system and probably my Linn Axis soounds best of all

Car sound system as good as my home system - that would be good.... but unachievable

All I know about the Dyns is that some glue on the 'spider' - whatever that means came lose - something that stops the thingy that move back and forth from shooting forward! - I'm so technical!

Apparently its fairly common.... and I think one of the reasons the place that supplies lots has moved towards Diamond speakers - but they are veryyyyyy expensive!

Well, decision made.

Thanks for the advice and knowledgeable overview of the available product range guys (thanks for the phone call Adam).

I've gone for Audiobahn speakers. Made in the Diamond Audio factory (IIRC), similar sort of price as the Focals but apparently better at handling the power. (Huge over-simplification of performance summary).

Should be here by weekend (I hope), I'll report back on how well they perform later.

Mike.

(Edited cos I can't spell Audibahn and Moray would crucify me if he saw that).
