Question

Any thoughts on the standard double DIN head unit in the MY02? About to take delivery, so just wondered. And, if it's as bad as everyone reckons, who does double DIN head units as a replacement?

Cheers, Harry.

Assuming it's the same as my UK300 then it's rubbish, although they seem to be OK in some cars (mine jumps). I am going to change mine for a single DIN and get a bit of extra storage space to boot. In fact I am about to post something in here!

Sony, Clarion & pioneer all do double DIN units....
The Sony one is very, very dull & dated....
The pioneer is virtually all display, bit much, though personal taste...
The Clarion is inbetween, it matches the colour of dash and blends in fairly well.
All 3 have tape and single CD.
Oh, and by the way I have the clarion, its not everyones cup of tea, but its a damn site better than the original, and I got it on a deal. But be warned, upgrading the stereo WILL make you upgrade the speakers and poss starting thinking about amps..... or was that just me , it seems to highlight the existing speakers deficencies.

Hi Guys - thanks for this. I've been down the upgrade route before, but am hoping to resist it this time.... The thought of that Clarion looks good though!

The clarion is acutally an upgrade in the wrx options catalogue,
along with a corresponding 6 stack changer...
I acutally got mine done through the dealer before collection.

Harry.

My standard headunit has been in the loft from virtually day one.

I would have bought the Pioneer unit but could not afford the expense after buying the car. It looks and sounds awesome and has a steering wheel remote thrown in.

I went for a single din conversion.

1. I now have somewhere to put my sunglasses case
2. I could then afford a six disc changer aswell.

Whichever option you go for It sounds a millino time better. If you change the head unit please change the speakers. When you see the original speakers come out you'll see why. They really are that bad.

Cheers Nathan - did you go for original fit ones, or are you recommending butchering door panels etc?

Harry

Went for O.E fit speakers.

There are divided opinions on which speakers are best.

Infinity speakers are superb but there are others.

I can't for the life of me remember the sizes though

I've run the speakers through an Alpine headunit and it sounds pretty good. In retrospect I probably would have dynomatted the door panels to inrease sound quality.

Look at this website. http://www.chiark.co.uk/scooby/default.asp It was written by Chiark the moderator on this forum. It contains very good and useful infomation.

Nathan..

Sorry, cant' help you there. Mine was fitted by the
dealer. It took about 45mins to get it fitted, mainly
because the single din radio wouldn't come out without
removing the silver plastic.
btw. the joystick is an option with the Pioneer. Don't like
them anyway.
Cheers

Had a Nakamichi cd-40z fitted to my MY01. Fitted with new MB Quarts components and dynamat doors by Car Electronics of Leicester. nice job - installer said the single din was a bugger to fit in and he had to take off the panelling to get it in properly - so not sure id wanna do it myself!! If your local dealer offers a "free fitting over £250" service like CEL do - go for it!!!

Looks a bit boring - no swiming dolphins / flashing lights - but sounds SSSSSSSWWWWEEEEEETTTTTT!

And it goes nicely with rest of interior

If you are Yorkshire based, it might be worth visiting Eurocar in Ossett near Wakefield. They have got the Pioneer Double DIN one on display. Looks nice but expensive IMHO circa £600.00

All I have done is upgrade the front speakers and tweeters with some nice Fusion jobbies £170.00 fitted. This had made a big difference to the OEM head-unit. Please bear in mind that I am no ICE fanatic. Much prefer the sound of the exhaust to be honest

I am in Leeds if you want to have a look/listen.

Hi Nathan - ICE only Mate - no lime!!

Tony - thanks for the offer. I'll see how bad mine is when it arrives (counting the hours now!), and might take you up on this. Do I assume that you drive everywhere with the windows open?

Nice one Tony! I'm not a million miles from you, so I might pop over and give it a listen (and the sound system!).

Anyone know who makes the standard MY02 head unit? And, if so, what's the approximate value?

Cheers, HB.

Cool

Had a word with my local car audio dealer, and he reckons that Pioneer, Kenwood and Alpine all have new double din units in the pipeline (including sat nav, cd, mp3, digital radio etc), which should be streets ahead of the stuff currently available. He thought they should be out within 5-6 months, so it might be worth the wait...
