Went with the headunit out of my old car which is a JVC unit i got a couple of years ago that supports mp3/wma on SD cards (i can never be bothered to burn CDs so i just swap the mp3 contents onto the car via a memory reader).
Used the silver forester pocket to fill the gap underneath, looks excellent. Doesn't have to be expensive to change - headunits don't cost a bomb nowadays and the pocket is £12 from your local Subaru dealer

Replaced mine with kenwood anniversary on the day I bought it.
2001 car with a tape deck!!!!
You'll find an even bigger improvement by replacing the speakers too.
the standard paper one's are pants

Above you mentioned that you used a forester pocket to fill the gap. where did you get yours and will this work for me?
I should note that i already have a single din subaru head unit in-will this be ok to except a new single din head unit?
Sorry if these seem like stupid questions!!
Cheers

You can get the Forester pocket from a Subaru dealer (may take a while though) or Roger Clark (I think). If you have a bugeye you may need to drill a few holes in the brackets for the Forester one, the Impreza one fits perfectly.
