Speakers for a 5 Door
#1
Hi,
What speaker size would an MY98 5 door (UK spec) need for the rear doors. I know they're 6" in the front but just want to confirm the rear before replacing them.
Also, what do people think the best component speakers for the front would be on a budget of up to £200?

Hi,
Thanks for this.
I didn't go for the dynamat pads, it was a sheet since it seemed better value.
Not too much of a problem to fit except that it is VERY sticky and then wants to mould to whatever you touch with it!
So far I have:
1.. Put the THICK carpet underlay in the back under the boot carpet.
2.. Put dynamat in the bit with the rear-wiper assembly.
3.. Removed the back door panels and cut the dynamat around the speaker housing, then taped all loose wires (electric windows).
4.. Taped up the front doors but not dynamatted the speakers since I'm getting new ones fitted.
5.. Used spare dynamat to resolve some of the squeaks and creaks in my car
It does make a heck of a difference, bass is much improved - what I need now is decent speakers.
Anything specific, e-mail me if you like.

DAN: What MY is yours? The rear speakers in my MY98 are definitely in the back doors, same position as the front speaker but without the tweeter bit. I already have a decent ICE for those moments when the Turbo/exhaust note isn't enough and just want speakers that don't bass out, it's all insured by item on my policy if it gets nicket
MATT: I had already decided on the Infinity speakers by coincidence, getting them fitted tomorrow. (I know I could do it, just don't have the time at the mo.)
Thanks for the help everyone

I've put 16" all round in my 5 door. Went to put in 5 1/4 in the rears but thought better of it.......
Rear doors???? I thought they were mounted on the back, behind the seats......
If they are in the doors, any chance of a piccy - sounds like an interesting mod
For £200 you'e looking at Infinities or Dynaudio. Personally, I've just £200 of speakers TOTAL in the car, after all, you've got a 2l turbo in front of your steering wheel
Plus, god forbid, but if your pride and joy gets nicked, you haven't lost an expensive set of speakers.....
Much better to spend the dough on and overall system I think, but just my opinion....
Having said that, I've got a sub in the boot (which helps ALOT!!)
Hope this helps.....

Hi,
I just got a pair of Infinity 60.2CS components for £190 and they sound superb. Really clean, detailed and have really good bottom end response. If you go for them you will grin

I believe that for 5drs Pre My97 big side pods in boot so speakers fitted there (6") - Post My97 boot side pods small giving more boot space so speakers in rear doors (as per saloons).

I've got a 97P and the speakers are in the rear doors.
Focals (spelling?) in the front and Infinity (Reference, greeny cones) in the rear door. £250 inc fitting them and a head unit.
The fronts are excellent for imaging , treble and mid-range, deserve an amp really.
Rears are there to replace the very bad OE speakers.
I don't want a sub box in the boot (the luggage cover rattles like $%^&) so a false floor is a possibility to solve the lack of bass.
Or just listen for the whistle from the engine....

I wouldn't bother with putting mega expensive speakers in the rear doors - just a set of the normal upgrade speakers should be enough. I've got JBLs in there, don't know what model it's that long since I replaced them.
The reason being, is that if you look at where the speakers are directing the sound, it is right into the the passenger's legs.
