How can I place a genuine cupholder under the center vents in the dashboard of an 1998 Impreza?

 

Simple,

buy the cupholder from your local dealer and fit it!!! (It does fit a MY98).

I've done this - yes I'm sad. Cost about £12 all in, and about 30 minutes to fit.
Big Hint:- saw off the plastic lug on the cupholder assembly that is supposed to be bolted to the bulkhead - its unnecessary and would mean removing both the plastic facia and the metal frame and hifi to attach it. The unit can just be screwed onto the plate where the blanking plate was, and is still pretty sturdy.
