Default Letting bass through

Have just started my install, currently have up and running 2 X 12" JLaudio subs in a non ported box. Run by a PG amp.

Do you need to do anything to let the bass through the back, being a saloon it does not have the same thump in the car as expected, hatchback cars of the past of mine have been nearly unbearable with a lesser set up.

Please advice

Bass is non directional so shouldn't matter where it goes. Ive seen some guys putting subs at the back of the arm rest so you can see the sub but risk of damage I suppose. Is the amp big enough and is the crossover effective (ie lower hz).

It's not a matter of it being directional. Car makers spend £££££ on sound insulation to prevent noise from the rear of the car entering the cabin. In a saloon the bass has to get through a seat back and a rigid parcel shelf neither of which is designed to transmit sound waves i.e. pulses of air pressure.

Would you buy an expensive surround system for your house and then sick the subwoofer in the cuboard under the stairs???

Hatches usually have a flimsy shelf with plenty of air gaps that can let the pressure into the cabin, saloons don't.

What you could do is make some 6" holes in the parcel shelf and put speaker grills over them.

there are already holes in the rear shelf, they just have rear speakers in them, take them out as they are not needed anyway! Thats if you feel that you need to, with 2 x JL subs i should imagine that they will make their presence felt with out to much trouble at all, if your not happy with the way they sound it could be another factor that is causing them to underperform as it were! is the amp set up correctly, is the sub enclosure the correct size, have you enough power etc etc

make sure the amps are on "LP" (low pass) at the filter so you only get the lower sounds and make sure the polarity is correct.

You say you have two of these JL's and one amp?????

For a bit more ooommpfff try running the subs off one channel on the amp.

Like-- pos.amp ------------- pos.JL1-----pos.JL2

neg.amp--------------neg.JL1-----neg.JL2

Ah so it would be an idea to turn the box around then, as its facing outward at the mo.

The subs were already wired into the amp as its bolted to the box.

i think alot of it is to do with the box and setup.

i have a 12 kenwood in a custom made bandpass box tund to about 45hertz, powered by a small amp, when that thing drops it shakes the car so yours should do the same, i have mine facing up though, and will soon remove my rear speakers

Just had a quick peek.

Bearing in mind im a real newbie with this stuff

There are three dials on the amp, one for low one for high

And a third, which im assuming is the "gain"

Turnes it up a bit and tested it, nearly cracked my spoiler

I will leave it down at the mo as still have standard door speakers and dont wish to just hear bass, should get the doors done soon after Xmas to compliment it

to much base makes you sick - as said don't both with holes

its mid base that you are probably missing and that will come from good front comp's and plenty of dynomat

I have some sound deadening, will start ripping out the boot over next weekend and start sticking it on.

For mid bass, will decent door speakers running from an amp be suitable

ok with regards sound deadening

boot - loads on the sides and boot lid , i didn't both much with the floor

doors - I did the whole door but didnt bother with the door card

mid base will come for the front speakers spend as much as you can here and yes you will need an amp

forget rear speakers

Cookie, dont use the gain as a volume control for your sub!!!!!!!

Find some where quiet and non residential, turn the gain right down, then turn your car stereo all the way to the point it starts distorting then turn it back down a bit so it's clear.
Then start on the gain dial and slowly turn it up till you get the desired level of bass to complement the rest of the speakers and the sound you want mate.

IF IT SOUNDS RIGHT TO YOU - IT'S PROBABLY RIGHT

I know it been said before but it's true - hope it helps

You can PM me if have any other q's mate
