Sat Nav

Sat Nav
Thinking of getting a sat nav (poss Navman PIN570 pda sort) for 53 STI.
Only concern is the way the mounts go onto the windscreen.
Are there any to be avoided or recommendations.
Also wondered whether I would be ableto hear over the exhaust?

Im thinking about getting the AA navigator ultimate for an 03 sti, would also welcome some comments about anyone with sat nav.
out of interest do you have details on the model your looking at, the reason i was thinking of the aa one is you get free speed camera info.

I was gunna use these boys www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk
£230 including free set up and cameras. Like the unit but would like opinions on the mounting. Everything else bounces up and down in the STI

I have a Navman PIN 100 PDA (same as Mio 168) which I use in a standard WRX. The suction screen mount can vibrate a bit but is easy to use. I can hear the the nice lady's instructions easily using both TomTom Navigator & SmartST. Something to watch out for: if the power cable rests on the painted fascia bits it will rub the paint off.
Don't leave the sat nav in the car, it is the most popular item to nick from a car. The advantage of a PDA over, say a TomTom Go, is that it is easily pocketable. It is said that thieves even look for the circular mark left on the windscreen by the mounting!
Hope this helps

i use a navman for work etc1 it works really well and the bracket is just like a sucker onto the screen! mines the icn 510 model, Only advise is some new and newish cars the windscreens can restrict the signal! esp if the have a heat'd front screen or the radio ariel in the screen aswell! if this is the case an external stuby ariel will have to go on your roof! which wont look very pretty! p.s you will be able to hear it over you exhaust! lol

i have been using Tom Tom on my IPAQ PDA for years.
can't recommend Tom Tom enough. my mum has just bought the Road Angel version - its absolute rubbish. very hard to change instructions on the fly & screen is poor + its around £500.
you can get a decent tom tom set up for around £250

On the list of compatible PDA's are these the only ones that will work?
I'm looking at a PDA that isn't on the list (Asus) but it has the built in GPS Receiver and runs Windows Mobile 2003, would this still work...?

Hi,
I recently bought myself a tomtom one (£250) from halfrauds, very good money in my opinion. Found it to be absolutually excellent, bought it because I am going to start being a taxi driver in a few weeks.
IMO the tomtom one is far better than the tomtom go 300 etc, for a start it has a faster processor, the screen is brighter, has bluetooth etc, no real need for the few extra's of the tomtom go's 300 and upwards etc. Far better than any other the others.
Easy to operate and change route etc on the fly, if you take a wrong turning it auto recalculates your route for you. has a road block option,so say traffic is static of a mile you can get it to change and recalculate it to avoid the road your on as soon as possible.
Loads of other features. definitely recommend it over the others.

StuB - whatever you go for, I'd avoid fitting a holder to the windscreen. If kindof advertises to scumbags that there may be something worth nicking in the glovebox!
I went for a Mitac Mio 168 with tomtom - it fits quite neatly in the cupholder on the dash. Nice piece of kit, especially with the speed camera database from pocketgpsworld.
If I was buying today I'd go for the TomTom One because its got a better chipset so locks on to satellites better

After reading your comments popped to halfrauds on friday and picked up the GArmin i3. Bit shocked on how small to start but after four days of constant use through leeds and london i'm very impressed for 130squid. Screen size is fine and slips into bag when parking car.
Would def recommend if you're on a budget.
Only error so far was trying to find BRE centre in Watford and it tried sending me of a non existant slip road on the M1. Using the road name rather than the postcode sorted it.
Final comment....
put software on pc and and plugged the two together. Any idea what you're supposed to do when theyre connected? Doesnt seem to link

Got to say it was 130squid well spent. I now see they were 125 at car phone wharehouse.
A bit unpredictable tho, recent trip deep into peak district sent me right through the centre of sheffield then up some of the narrowest hilliest lanes ever. But as normal got me right to the door within a few minutes of the original predicted arrival time.
Would be lost without it now (great pun)

Woolworths are currently selling the Garmin I3 for £99 !
(previous poster - check the settings to ensure you have Quickest route enabled and not Shortest route. Shortest seems to take you on all the smaller roads/lanes)
