Default Speaker Upgrade, but keeping standard headunit

Ive purchased an 05 wrx 300. I was thinking of upgrading the speakers but keeping the original double din headunit. would there be much sound quality difference or is it pointless unless you get a decent powerful headunit?

I think most people would say start from the top really.

Do the headunit, then do the speakers.

I do know why you want to do the speakers though. Mine sounded really rubbish - rattled and everything- but it depends on your budget I guess.

I did that, thinking that it was the loudspeakers which were the weakest link.

With 'decent' loudspeakers I had to use stupid EQ settings on the standard HU to get it to sound half decent; it really couldn't drive them.

So, I reckon the standard HU is ideally matched to the standard 'speakers - they are both totally sh*te.

Repalce what you want; you'll end up replacing it all in the end...

Replace both... you can get a decent set up for about £250.

Not bad advice, but electronics are 'easier' to design to sound okay than 'speakers, what with all-in-one chipsets etc.

That's what I based my descision to change the 'speakers first on anyway, and a fat lot of good it did me, lol!

its not the electronics and chip sets that are crap, it is the quality of amplification where the sound quality turns to crap.

Aftermarket headunits tend to sound better as tey have far better internal amplifiers.

Bin the headunit. Just done mine and even with standard door speakers it sounds much better. Speakers are coming out tomorrow as I just got some Polks for back and JBLs for front. Cannot believe headunit made by Kenwood. Utter crap!!!

If you want any kind of quality sound, you MUST change the dreadful head unit! I installed a decent Kenwood unit with a 10 disc CD in the boot. The sound quality was noticably better. When I replaced the even more dreadful speakers for some quality items front and rear, the difference was amazing.
OK so the fronts are a bit of a pain having to use spacers, but at the end of the day, it was worth it.
