Hi All

I'm hoping to take delivery of my new scoob in about 3 weeks or so. As it comes with no radio at all I was thinking about what to install. I'm after a minidisk head unit with CD auto changer in the boot. Can you guys help me out with suggestions as to make / model ? Also what speakers would suit (4dr car btw). Budget of about 400 - 500

TIA

Adam

I suppose it depends on whether you want to expand (the stereo that is) in the future!

If so, I've seen the Kenwood MD headunit with MASK+ (flips the panel to a blank, or in really dodgy areas the face is fully removable!) I have the older one (just normal MASK), and sound quality is similar to the new one!

Seen the MASK+ advertised at £300, and 6 or 10 disk changer for about £120-ish!

That's blown your budget and you haven't even got speakers yet!!

Do you have any preferred brands, etc?? And I'll have a rethink!!

What year model is it? 2001 takes double DIN units, which gives you an interesting option...

Andy,

.. so you reckon on Kenwood as opposed to Sony Alpine etc ... ?? I have no real brand prefs. ... just want a good sound.
... cheers

Chiark,

MY2000, but it's an import with the double dDIN; however I've already earmarked the second DIN for the LINK ecu bits.

I've got the Kenwood PS970 minidisc unit, and rate it. Before that I had the 8-series unit, and the quality is noticeable...

I've heard the Sony and Panasonic offerings for MiniDisk, and didn't think they sounded as good as the Kenwood. I went for the Kenwood as it had 3 * 4v pre-outs (Less distortion when amplifying, and 3 RCA's offered more control from the head unit), where as the others only had standard outputs or just two RCA's.

Personal preferance and all that, but go to a good stereo shop and have a listen. Take your own MiniDisk along!!

I've heard the Kenwood MD without the MASK system, 2 RCA output's, and has a removable face. These are less than £200, so say under £300 with a CD changer.

Last seasons speakers from the likes of Kenwood, Alpine, Sony, Pioneer, etc cost around £40-50. 6.5" in the front, and up to 6"x9" on the rear shelf.

Look in the back of Fast Car/Max Power/etc.

You should have the whole system for less than £400 and sounding much better than the standard one (if it were installed!! )

And still room to amp the head unit later, if you so desire!!!

Hope this helps
Andy

PS - Chiark, maybe you should post your ICE FAQ URL, to give Adam here a helping hand!!

Adam,
I've got the Sony MD head unit, and I rate it very highly. Also got the 10 Disc multiCD too.
It only has 2 x RCA outs (compared to the Kenwood's 3).

IT IS PERSONAL PREFERENCE. They all sound good. I'll be honest (this is just my opinion) I've had Kenwoods, Pioneer, AND Sony. The best one I heard was actually the Pioneer, but at the time when I bought the MD, only Sony were making it......

If you look in my profile, you can see my website (Scooby ICE)......

Hope this helps (or just adds to the confusion <grin> )
Sorry.

Dan

Hi All

Just thought you may be interested to hear what I've finally settled on (to begin with) :

Kenwood KMD PS971R MD head unit
Kenwood 717 10 disc autochanger
JL 17cm components

... still thinking about rears.

... must remember to look up the word BUDGET in a dictionary

Thanks for all the useful advice

Adam
