Importing headunit from USA?
In another bid to beat rip-off Britain, I'm tempted by the Nakamichi CD400 which is $309 from woofersetc in the states (approx £170) and £450 here.
Even adding in shipping, customs & VAT its still only around £250.
Not sure if it's worth the risk - if nothing goes wrong it's a great deal, but returning it to North Carolina under warranty would be a pain, and I'm not sure it'll arrive in one piece in the first place.
Has anyone had experience of doing this? I'd be most grateful for your thoughts
Phil
Alternately, do I go for low risk and buy the KDW6527SE with its 24-bit Burr Brown etc etc from CAD?

the problem you will have is that the States and Canada use differnt radio frequency increments to us, so you wont get some of the radio stations here.
i think where as ours go in 0.05 increments, theres go up in 0.2. so if for example Radio 1 is frequency 97.7, you wont get it. it will be fine if its 97.0 though...

I got a nice Alpine head unit from Canada two years ago. It was a good deal however the radio reception was v.bad. You'll only pick them up where the signals a very strong.

late model alpines tune into uk frequencies so no issues. you just lose RDS.
wouldn't advise a Nak they have had reliability issues..........i have 2 45Z's and a 40Z at home as we speak
if you want a Alpine 9835 in your mitts i can offer one imported with no import duty for £275 to your door

Thanks kind people - looks like the Nak's out. A unit with poor reliability and effectively no guarantee is not a good idea! I can't get my head round the idea of explaining to customs that it's going back & forth across the Atlantic for claims under warranty!!
troublemaker - Seen posts on talkaudio about reception being poor on imported US Alpines so I think they're out too. A completely unrelated plug to you an a fellow classic UK wagon owner- Powerstation in Cheltenham are great at setting up classic scoobs.
Back to browsing UK websites I s'pose!
