Question Ripping questions...

I've been ripping some mp3 tracks to play on my alpine h/u using CDex 1.51 but find that the extension (.mp3) is left on the file so it shows on the h/u when I play the track

Is there a setting in CDex to not show the extension or do I have to rename all the files individually?

I was using the ripper with the standard options unchanged...

Also, what's the difference between mp3 and wma tracks? Is one better quality or smaller etc? I haven't got an autochanger so aren't bothered that I can't play wma tracks from one.

Thanks,

Andy

Does CDEX write the ID3 tags to the files? If it doesn't, the head unit might show the filename when it can't find any ID3 info.

Don't know for sure... just a guessed suggestion.

Not sure if there's much difference apart from the file format. ISTR that WMA might be a little smaller in terms of file size; think the big difference though might be that WMA has more support for DRM than MP3 files.

CDex is supposedly putting ID3 version 1 & 2 tags onto the files and the h/u supports them

I have some tracks AFAIR that don't show the .mp3 so I'll see if I can find out what's happened differently to these

What's DRM for the thickies amongst us?

DRM = digital rights management... copy protection in other words.

JohnS is right.

Your headunit is set to read the filename hence the .mp3 file extension can be seen.

Have a read of your manual to see if this can be changed. I know on my kenwood you can set the reading parameters between file name, folder name, album name etc

All I can find is that it won't play tracks without the .mp3 extension on the file but it doesn't say anything about turning it off unless it's something I can do with the ID3 tags?

It's an Alpine 9815 unit if this helps...

I think I've sorted it

If you scroll through the titles you can get the track name and artist without the .mp3 on the end - I must have been displaying the filename instead - D'Oh

Just got to work out whether I can get track name and album instead now...

wma are smaller and sound better but alot of them are protected so if you cdr them they wont play back also you dont get many bad wma's and you do mp3's (files that dont work or have hissing)
