What extra bass can I get for 150-200 quid?
#1
I have just upgraded the stereo and speakers in my MY03 - Kenwood speakers and Alpine head unit. To be honest I am a bit disappointed, yes it does sound better - but still hardly any bass. As I now do not have much cash left, what could you recommend.
I do not want to be rattling windows as I drive along, but just want a bit more oomph!!
Cheers,
Mike

You could get a second hand amp and sub if you look around carefully I guess.
I'm in the same position as you and am going to fit (this weekend, I promise) some Genesis p69-4 6x9 subs. At £150 a pair they are good value but need to be driven so you'd need an amp.
One way of improving bass a little is to Dynamat the front doors, both on the inner skin around the speaker and on the inside of the outer skin directly behind the speaker magnet. You should be doing this anyway, IMHO.
cheers

I assume you've got Kenwood coaxials?
In that case you want to switch to components to beef up your bottom end and your mid-range. Good tweeters will help with the topend.
If you don't want to get a sub and amp, then I suggest putting in the Alpine Type-R 176A components in the front doors, these are very bassy speakers (once run in, about 60hrs) and have a very low response range (30Hz-35kHz). I use these as I don't want a sub but I find if you tune the crossovers with the HU, you can get a very nice, rounded soundstage.
Seeing as you have an Alpine headunit, these speakers are Bass Engine ready.
Good luck!
