looking at replacing the front speakers on my MY00 with some of the Sony Xplod speakers and would like to make use of the seperate tweater brackets near the door handle.

Anyone know which ones I should be looking at and a rough cost inc fitting?

if it was anybody else that posted that reply I'd have taken it with a pinch of salt but seeing as it's chiark I'd better heed the warning!

what do you suggest then?

To be honest - I'd like it fitted - cos I really can't be bothered.

it's a personal taste thing - I think you can do a lot better for the money than xplod. What's your music taste? Any amps? What source for music? What sort of budget were you thinking?

The MY00 can take a silly amount of MDF behind the door card so depth isn't much of an issue. I ended up with 12mm on top of the original plastic pod with no issues...

BTW, a lot of people on here have stunning setups that would knock mine into a cocked hat...

the car is usually where you'll find my collection of ministry of sound cd's and allsorts including Metallica, Feeder and shame beyond Shame - Steps.

like a lot of base but dont want a sub in the boot (need room for golf clubs). like to take advantage of the tweeter fixings as I think the amount of bass I usually like tends to drown it out.

Got a Kenwood cd player (cant remember model) its about 18 months old was around £200 and its still available new i think - power is 4x45W.

Like it loud - wouldnt mind bigger speakers than standard but cutting spacers sounds like too much hard work and I'm liable to make a mess of it.

Could do with a little sound deadedning in the doors too i reckon

Halfords (well, the larger stores anyway) are doing a decent range of speakers etc at the moment, so you could go along and try some out - although you will need to clear away the schoolkids first!

A lot of people go for the Infinity range, which is currently running at 5p less than a tonne in the afore mentioned Halfords..! Not a bad price AFAIK.

I agree with Chiark... Sony are not near the top in the car audio stakes in my opinion

you might find infinities a little bright on some of that music, but it might just be what you want? For 200 quid including fitting, you've got a stonking setup... If that's about right money-wise, then I could recommend a few.

If that was the case why didnt you jsut email him instead, rather than making others feel like its a waste of time even considering replying.

no offence intended - all recommendations and advice appreciated. Just that whenever someone posts a ICE install problem the reply usually contains a clicky to Chiarks site.

Heard a lot about the Infinity's although £100 is a bit more than I want to pay. (having said that, hands up those who paid £200 for a centre speaker for the telly!) Is it possible to buy premade spacers to use larger speakers?

Would like a couple of tweeters but they're not essential.

Cheers for the links - will have a ratch round later.

Someone on ebay is punting out premade MDF lumps at around 10 quid. I think auto acoustics also make 'em.

I really should make a template sometime and upload it - anyone already got one?

Cheers,
Nick.

I have Sony X-plod speakers in the front doors of my MY99.
Bought them in Japan so they were a direct replacement, along with some MDF spacers.
Might be that they are not the best what you can get but anything is better then the OEM speakers. you'll have a laugh the first time you remove them and hold them in your hands. (made of paper).

The first few days I had the Sony's in my car, I was going nuts, in some songs I could hear sounds (pitches, drums whatever) that I couldn't hear before (normal with the crap OEM thingies), and me was thinking there something wrong with my dashboard making strange noises......

made of paper
Some of the most expensive speakers in the world still are

You're absolutely right though - the Sonys are a vast improvement on the standard.

The focals are a good bet IMHO.
Cheers,
Nick.

Oh, really? Didn't know that aftermarket speakers (Infinity, Kenwood, Sony, you name it) are made of paper too...
When I looked at the Sony ones, they did not feel like paper. Maybe there's paper inside??

Oh, another thing I heard is that each manufacturer has its own "special" sound, like sony projecting a more "metallic" sound, Pioneer being softer etc , is that true?
