Already got an Eclipse amp and an Alpine headunit with sub control.

What are Stealthboxes like? Seem like a neat space saving solution and the rear shelf might not have any more room.

Want to install a sub but have no idea where to start. Don't want something that melts tarmac, or to spend a fortune - Also, don't want to fill the whole boot up.

Is it possible to have a compact subwoofer or is that just not what it's about?

Any tips/product recommendations for a first buy?

Thanx.

Different subs require different sized enclosures. If you're not after really deep bass you might consider an 8" sub which will typically require a smaller enc than a 12". Of course, not all subs of the same size req the same sized box, so even if you decided you'd prefer a 10" or 12" then just choose one that'll need a smaller box (often measured in litres).

Kicker do a square 8" sub that gives a reasonable sound for it's size.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - do listen to the new Genesis audiophile 6x9 subs. They're subs, not "normal" 6x9s which are full range.

They'll fit under the shelf of a saloon quite nicely.

There are a lot of things to consider but the biggest one is going to be your budget.

Don't forget that when buying a sub, you will also need an amp and cabling as well. This will put the cost up considerably.
You could try an active sub off the shelf with an amp attached but I personally have no experience of these.

If you don't mind spending a few quid and want something a bit special then my suggestion is to take a look at JL. Especially their W7 range. They work in incredibly small enclosures if they remain sealed.
To complement, try either JL or Soundstream for a decent amp.

Stealth boxes are a nice looking idea but they are made to suit a car - not a specific sub manufacturer/model/spec etc.

Very good idea for ease of fit and coz you don't have to build anything, but not ultimately the best for the money.

An 8W7 will work superbly in a box about a third of the size of a stealth box.

What car are we talking about btw?

I'm not in any way saying that stealth bozes are crap, my girlfriend has two in her escort.
They're a fairly good fit but for outright performance, I should have built her a box to house the lot.
Thats what we're going to do next.

Actually, as Chicken Man says, give us a clue on budget... The W7 stuff is wonderful, but a tad pricy and very physically deep.

It's an MY01 WRX.

Not sure about budget as I don't know how much these things cost - £200 ish? Is that nowhere near what I'd need?

Chiark,

So you know of any installs of these Genesis 6x9 subs in a scooby? I'm quite keen at looking into free air subs but I am a little worried that they may not perform as well as a good sub, say a 12" Diamond Mac Daddy in a decent box.

not yet in a scoob, no... There is little to no way that they will be the same as a 12" Diamond macdaddy in a good box, but on the other hand they give real "sub" output and also play directly into the cabin - which is a problem that I found with the saloon when running 2 JL 10W6s with enough power...

200 quid will get you a entry to mid-range sub, amp, box and cabling.

Chiark,

So where have you listened to the 6x9 Genesis subs? do the hit the low notes like a true sub? I know they won't go as low as one in an enclosure but as you say subs in a box in a saloon don't allways perform that well, in fact I find they shake the boot more than anything, hence the reason I'm also looking at freee air subs but was considering 8" ones mounted under the parcel shelf.

Well, my plans are now to fit a 4 channel amp powering front speakers and a pair of the Genesis 6x9 subs, leaving the rear door speakers powered by the headunit - I think that will work ok.

I am still working out the best way to fit the 6x9's from underneath in a saloon, as the underneath of the shelf is not nice and flat....

I got a vibe 10" ported and it drops nice and low and is punchy too, doesnt take up loads of space still got room for the shopping, though the kitchen towl bag always goes infront of the cone and not the baked beans if you get what i mean

but then i got a smaller boot too than you scooby owners

Cliff, Getting bass into a hatch or coupe is no problem at all, totally different kettle of fish when your talking saloon cars.

At a demo at Source Sounds, in Sheffield... They do go surprisingly low. Do audition if you get the chance.

Thanks for your advice and ideas, people.

Are Source Sounds in Sheff a good place to go for getting a sub installed? Anyone got any other Sheffield recommendations?

Didn't realise you were from there! IMHO they're excellent. Check them out on a Saturday and you'll see a load of enthusiasts just hanging around
