I have a really odd "feature" with my Kenwood mask stereo. When the volume is low, I hear what I can only describe as a phone ring over thespeakers. It is independant of the stereo volume control and fades away when the unit is out of its hole in the dash.

I'm confused!! What the heck is it???

Is your cellphone close to the radio ?
When my phone is below my radio (Alpine) it will interfear on the speakers when it's sending signals to the network.
No problems when it's in the carkit.

Thanks for the reply

I don't have a cell phone...

The noise I hear only resembles a phone ring sound. I suspect it is interference from somewhere, but I haven't a clue where...

Wish I did - It would be an easy problem to solve then

This is really happening, and it's really annoying - I know it sounds muppet like...

Guess I'll just have to turn the volume up!

Which model is it - some have an external transformer that regulates power. does yours have this? What car are you running it in?

Question

Does it happen when the engine is started?

Si, that's a damn good point. That external unit is the voltage regulator for the display which could conceivably induce noise in the system which is why it's external.

My external lump is tucked down the side of the passenger footwell, well out of harm's way.

The interference occurs when the engine is OFF and the key is in the acc position. The stereo is a Kenwood 798 I think. (MASK, tape player and fancy display.) Now with MP3 CD changer...

You're probably correct about the transformer - it does seem a bit like PWM noise - I will try moving the little so-and-so around to see what it does. Seems obvious when you aren't being silly and rushing to get the car back together

Thanks all.
