How to get a spare key
Hi guys,
my name is Marc. I'm from Germany, but I own a 2004 STI from UK. It only came with one key, and I'd love to have a spare key.
By the way, please excuse me, if my English is a bit rough here and there.
I read some posts here, and already found out that getting a new key from Subaru is freakin' expensive.
What are the other options?
Get a used key from ebay? Then what? Getting it grinded to fit with my lock? Can I afterwards learn the key to the alarmsystem by myself? Or is Subaru dealer needed in the end?
Any advice is highly appreciated!
Cheers,
Marc

Ha ha, I don't need an excuse for that. I love London, and have been to Scotland Last summer. Awesome!
I'll try some stores in Germany, if they can't I'll go for a Grand Tour!

Get a key blank from Subaru of from ebay. Get it cut locally.
This will allow you to unlock ing barrel. Car will not start until ecu get okay signal from immobiliser.
You have the newer transponder. I thing you cannot copy that unit but will need to code the new transponder to the immob/ecu. The older classics allowed key cloning.
Good luck. Do not lose that key. Also your car should have come with a small metal tage , this is the key blank cutting code. Else your subaru dealer should be able to give you the code to get a key cut. Getting am OEM style key is the easiest, but you could get a regular key cut and some locksmiths are able to supply pirate chips that work with the subaru immob. Note the immobiliser chip used in your car is used in others.
I need a build date or vin to give you the chip version used in your car.

I dont think its the auto lock option as it only happens when the boot is open and all doors are shut, plus the alarm doesn't arm, just doors lock

Is that the right key to buy?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-SU...#ht_538wt_1399
Does it work with the alarm system, remote locking and the immobilizer?
Cheers,
Marc

£165 Timpsons costs include key and transponder which fully deactivates immobiliser
I have quote from them here...

If you remote has a single button, then yes.
It your remote has two button then this is the type you need.

Note this is already cut and most likely will not fit your ignition barrel. However the key blank is usually available from locksmiths.
This is a blank key. (I do not think this is the right model for your car) Note the balde portion has not been cut

The locking of the doors is a function of the OEM keyless entry system
If you unlock the car doors with the remote, but only open the boot. The car will lock the doors after a predetermined period. Factory default.
This is a security feature eg you go to the shops and load some shopping into the boot and go back into the shops. Car auto locks.
Note if you open any one door, the system will not lock.
Dealer can program this out.
