How to get a spare key

Hi guys,

my name is Marc. I'm from Germany, but I own a 2004 STI from UK. It only came with one key, and I'd love to have a spare key.
By the way, please excuse me, if my English is a bit rough here and there. :Whatever_
I read some posts here, and already found out that getting a new key from Subaru is freakin' expensive.
What are the other options?
Get a used key from ebay? Then what? Getting it grinded to fit with my lock? Can I afterwards learn the key to the alarmsystem by myself? Or is Subaru dealer needed in the end?

Any advice is highly appreciated!

Cheers,
Marc

In the UK, SOME places that cut keys will cut you one.
Then you need to get it coded.

Worth asking in Germany, but if it's like France, key-cutting places aren't as likely to be able to do it.

mchammer666 18 March 2014 04:46 PM

Ok. So I will need to get a new key to get cut, right? A used one won't be of any help!?
Who's doing the coding? Only Subaru?

i had my key cloned aswell when i had my 53 plate sti i think it was around £50.00 mark, it worked perfect.

alcazar 18 March 2014 07:06 PM

Yeah, some Timpsons can and will. Others don't seem able.

mchammer666 18 March 2014 09:30 PM

Sounds like a fair price. Do they Need the Car, Or do they just copy from an original Key?

smiffywhu 18 March 2014 10:01 PM

They just need the key, looks like you need an excuse to come to England.

mchammer666 19 March 2014 08:33 AM

Ha ha, I don't need an excuse for that. I love London, and have been to Scotland Last summer. Awesome!
I'll try some stores in Germany, if they can't I'll go for a Grand Tour! :D

Get a key blank from Subaru of from ebay. Get it cut locally.

This will allow you to unlock ing barrel. Car will not start until ecu get okay signal from immobiliser.

You have the newer transponder. I thing you cannot copy that unit but will need to code the new transponder to the immob/ecu. The older classics allowed key cloning.

Good luck. Do not lose that key. Also your car should have come with a small metal tage , this is the key blank cutting code. Else your subaru dealer should be able to give you the code to get a key cut. Getting am OEM style key is the easiest, but you could get a regular key cut and some locksmiths are able to supply pirate chips that work with the subaru immob. Note the immobiliser chip used in your car is used in others.

I need a build date or vin to give you the chip version used in your car.

Any chance that you can link me to the key blank you got, i have an issue where if the boot is open then the car will autolock its self, so i want a spare just to open the doors ?

This was awhile ago. I will look or the info.

I believe the dealer can change this. My wife did this. Luckily while still in the garage. She was pi$$ed.

I dont think its the auto lock option as it only happens when the boot is open and all doors are shut, plus the alarm doesn't arm, just doors lock

mchammer666 19 March 2014 12:23 PM

Is that the right key to buy?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-SU...#ht_538wt_1399

Does it work with the alarm system, remote locking and the immobilizer?

Cheers,
Marc

£165 Timpsons costs include key and transponder which fully deactivates immobiliser
I have quote from them here...

forgedmarco 19 March 2014 01:14 PM

Quoted from timpsons £35 for key to be cut and chip cloned. All I'd need is another fob and program that to the car for Central locking.

silver6933 19 March 2014 01:58 PM

If you remote has a single button, then yes.

It your remote has two button then this is the type you need.

Note this is already cut and most likely will not fit your ignition barrel. However the key blank is usually available from locksmiths.

This is a blank key. (I do not think this is the right model for your car) Note the balde portion has not been cut

AT WRX5343

The locking of the doors is a function of the OEM keyless entry system

If you unlock the car doors with the remote, but only open the boot. The car will lock the doors after a predetermined period. Factory default.

This is a security feature eg you go to the shops and load some shopping into the boot and go back into the shops. Car auto locks.

Note if you open any one door, the system will not lock.

Dealer can program this out.
