Question 13.2v low voltage at idle, can it be anything else than..

the alternator??

My Scangague II started showing lower voltage on the way home Friday PM..
usually somewhere between 13.9 and 14.2 indicated and it dropped to 13.6 then 13.2'ish.
I made it home and put a multi gague across the batter at idle and was reading 13.2v.

before I go n order a new alternator is there another obvious case for under volting that I might have overlooked??
or how can i validate that the alternator is not putting out (enough) volts??

actually.. I have not checked if the earth is good.. whats the suggested method of checking?? I guess resistance from neg terminal to a point of the alternator body?

cheers in advance.

I suppose you'd be best cleaning the battery terminals and refit them to the battery and so on.

I'm sure I read somewhere that some cars are fitted with a so called "smart" alternator that drops voltage when the battery is well charged.

Might be worth looking in to before you buy anything!

Even early classics have that sort of alternator

Mine's 2volts below that and refusing to start at the moment. Get the alternator checked at a garage to be sure

THIS ^^ !!

You might have an issue, but before wasting money, at least trying reading the voltage with the headlights on and a little above idle speed.

lights were on.. they always are, have to drive with main lights on here all the time or DRLs if fitted...

Im going to check the connections, cables and voltages again tonight with and without lights/AC/demister/fan.

also double check the battery light comes on with the key in IGN, as I know its NOT on when Im driving.

Nice to know about cheap repairs for once.

Once clean and tightened, grease over the connectors to exclude water.
