Default Is this a h/gasket

Bloody hope, but think it is

Just got yesterday (95 wrx wagon, import), 130k, quite a good history with quite a few reciepts for work been done, timing belt, alarm with cert ect....but!

I got 2 test drives during the week and all seemed well driving/stopping ect, but tonight, went to my garage, took it out (from cold) drove bearly 2 miles and noticed the temp gauge dam near in the red . I put the heater and the blower on full right away, but it wasnt warm enough to take the heat from the engine, but did come down a bit.

I went to see my mother for about an hour so and let it cool ect....when driving again, it did the same thing. Sometimes with the heater on half or full doesnt matter) it went up (to dam near the red) then back to half way, it did this more less all the time, i drove about 15ish miles then though fk it get it back in the garage.

I havent checked the coolant yet, but it's got a fmic, cone filter, just wondered if something's not connected/loose ect somewhere...doubt it though

Could it be a dodgy t/stat....or am I right in saying it's either one or both head gaskets

It may well be HG failure, but rule out the obvious first. Check the level is OK, check the Thermo stat water pump & pressure cap.

Think it had the w/pump about 15k miles when the belts were done but I'll check....but I'm honestly expecting the worst....if that's the case, I dont know whether to fix or break it.

Meant to say, one of the previous owners, put pods in, oil, psi, and another I cant remember but not rigged up.....the oil one was at 110 when the cars temp was dam near at the red....just thought I'd say incase it's helpfull

I'll also get a new stat....is this a gen oem?

Temp sender gauge....again, it looks oem

in my opinion if its a hg failure then sooner rather than later you will probly develop a missfire, maybe white smoke aswell, could be a air lock, but with the tank on top of the engine ,air would eventually reach the top and water level would drop slightly

If as you say, the heater wasnt warm, it sounds like an airlock in the system. Try bleeding it first

Will do..

I just don't understand though why when I was in it twice with the seller for about 5-10miles, then a mate drove it back with me following, and not once did it happen (cause I phoned him last night and said, he said it was fine). So what the hell happen when sitting in the garage doing nothing then me taking it out last night

Water would be circulating as it should when warm but in the morning ,when cold, thermostat will hold the water back and thats when the airlock and shortage of water, could show up

Take the pipe off that goes from the turbo to the header tank and fill the system from there. Bit slow using a funnel but less chance of airlock

It may well be the hg but isnt it better to discount other basic things ,than to jump straight in , tear it down , and then find out it wasnt the hg. If you need it confirming properly , it needs a compression test done or a sniff test

It was low on water in the exp tank, took 2 pints, now the gauge sits half way fine, and goes just a bawhair past it and the fans kick in.......I'll keep my eye on it for a while though and if it does go down but no leaks then it can go out one other way.....the hg
