MOT - Emmisions Fail
Hi
Im curious, I've had an MOT today, and the car (turbo 2000 with PPP) has failed on emissions.
That's fair enough, however the car is as it came from the factory with pro drive exhaust gubbins.
No engine light on, so what might be causing the failure?
thanks in advance.

This could be due to a list of things. When was it last serviced? Are there any leaks on the exhaust? When was the last time it had a good long run out?
If there is nothing obvious it would be worth putting in some fuel system cleaner and taking it for a good run out. You need to get it really hot and then try the emissions again.
Just as a matter of interest what were the readings from the emissions test?

Last service - It needs one now. Hadn't even considered this as a factor!
Leaks on exhaust - None that I am aware of
Good run - It gets driven plenty. However its been sat for last day or two.
Garage said it needs a good run then they can try again. Fair enough. Hopefully its a simple case of it needs warming up a bit. They tested it pretty much from cold, so might explain it.
No idea on the readings, he said "it should be 30, but its 60" Ive no idea what that means.
I think a service and getting it up to temperature will be the solution here. Hopefully the garage can get that sorted by end of play today

Ok, It seems i've wasted an hour and an MOT fee.
Its failed on emissions. Fine. But the garage cant drive it for "insurance" reasons. So its sat there until I collect it. Why run a garage if you can't even drive the cars.
No chance of getting it sorted til Monday now.

I agree - engine needs to be warm. My 2005 PPP was struggling whilst being tested as I'd only literally driven it 3 miles to the MOT test centre. Once it had warmed up it sailed through...
Most places do a free retest within 7 calander days so you shouldn't have to fork out another test fee....

As above it might just need some heat, same again as turbo 2000 must be 12years + now so the cat might just be knackered. Lamba sensor might be knackerd. You should have a break down. Co2 level, hydrocarbon, lamba readings

Sounds like Cat as its the CO reading should be 0.30 or less
it needs to be warmed up i.e hold it at 5-6k rpm for a few minutes. Some garages will try and get it hot but others will just fail it
if that doesn't work then sounds like dead cat

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies. All good information.
I drove half a mile to the garage from cold. Think I will go back tomorrow for a re-test, following an early morning drive It clearly wasn't up to temperature.
