Don't you know there's a recession!!!
Hi all, new to the scoobu scene..
Just purchased a 2001 (round headlamps) 2.0 AWD non turbo estate.
Lovely car, only 76k on the clock (certified).
I'm looking for any hints / tips for better fuel economy..
Already laid off the revs, checked tire pressure and keeping ac off and windows up..
Just wondering if there are any setups (carbs, exhaust, plugs & leads, etc) that will aid the standard engine..
Also interested in the comparison for real life experience of the turbo'd versions fuel economy rather than the book / laboratory guide for urban / extra urban for standard..
A turbo'd version is further down the path, just like to have an idea for now
Many thanks peeps

Well I have a 2000 Sport Special and I get typically
28mpg city stop start
32mpg pootling around town
36mpg on a long motorway journey
It's possible to get it down to 19mpg completely flat out but I can't remember the last time I figured that mileage out. I average about 30-33.

Hi and welcome,
30 mpg is about right if you've not got lead right foot.
I've got a 2006 (hawk eye) R Sport wagon (160 bhp -you have 124 bhp phase 2 engine) and I get about 340 miles per tank - about 32 mpg - this halves when I'm towing the caravan though.
There's not much we can do about the fuel economy nor the lack of power apart from the usual air filters, exhausts, de-cats, keep it serviced regularly, etc.

Non turbos are never going to be good on fuel. The awd system isn't light and the awd also creates a higher rolling resistance over a 2wd. Keeping it serviced and and keeping an idea on pressures will help but I can't see you getting over 30mpg. Due to the lower torque figures you will need to burn more fuel compared to a turbo.I have a classic turbo ( w reg '2000') phase 2 engine. I average 30mpg but I do drive like miss daisy most of the time keeping at low boost. If I have a clear dry road I would say 20-25mpg isn't unrealistic. Power wise my car fairly oem.

Haha do what I do and just keep lying to yourself after a run out, that if you didn't boost on that straight or stuck off boost then it wouldn't have used hardly anything!!
These cars were never designed to be the fuel saver!
Good job my misses never asks how much I spend on fuel!

I have a 2.0 non turbo wagon! Mpg is not the best coming from a 1.6 to a scoob! But I don't no if its any difference on non turbos but I put cheap fuel in it at 130.9 a litre!!
