Default DIY cold air intake

i dont want to start a induction kit flame war or arguments here
i want the most turbo noise out of my car so id like a cone air filter
i dont want it to drag in hot air though so pipeing it into the wing seems like a good idea

iv seen kits to do this befor but has anyone made there own as the kits are really expensive?

im not on about tumble dryer hose crap im on about using silicon hoses and remade pipe bits to make a custom one?

Yep, I made mine out of silicone pipes from Ebay, used a 45 degree bend from the intake pipe, to the MAF then a reducer to fit an HKS mushroom filter onto the MAF. I'll take some pictures if you want to see how I've done it, I'm sure the total cost was less than £30 including the filter!

You do want to bear in mind though some people reckon an aftermarket air filter reduces the life expectancy of your MAF, mine's been fine in all the time I've had it so far but I've got a spare just in case!

Another approach is to ensure the inner wing is boxed (retaining the liner) and all gaping holes are sealed. Allow for an adequate aperture of the fog lamp cover (for instance) and adequate opening into the engine bay where the filter is. The natural flow of air being under a ram effect will do the rest.

This is what I have on mine (which is about as good as it gets performance wise at my level of specification) and it works absolutely fine with no need for ducting.

This is what I meant to do long term with mine but haven't gotten round to it yet. If you're fitting an open cone/mushroom type filter in your engine bay then you need to do whatever you can to keep the temperature around it as cool as possible. When I'm driving on track and it's not peeing it down I make sure to remove the blanking plate under the driver side vent as that seems to make a difference. (in my head ) )

I cut a naca into the front bumper and made up a filter shroud with a connector for some ducting. Filter can still draw engine bay air in so cant choke, but the ducting ensures it always gets flooded with cold air and most importantly pulls the heat out of the filter quickly after being stationary for a bit. I know cutting into bumpers isnt everyones cuppa, but mines a pretty tatty track car.

The ducting came off the naca duct a while back and air charge temps went up a tad as a result.

A bit late I know but I got a picture of my air filter set up today. A 45 degree bend is a bit too sharp to fit onto the intake pipe but if you cut it off at a slight angle as I've done it works fine.

It's not a cheap Ebay job if that's what you're thinking, it's an HKS mushroom filter but I replaced the element with a Simota one as the original green HKS one was really grim.
