Default Which top mount intercooler for early classic please???

Slanty type.
Before my remap I am doing a few mods to my 1992 WRX. I don't want to go front mount as not going for massive power but want to be better than stock.

I have the option to purchase an STi version 2 slanty top mount, I've read the alloy pipe work flows better than the WRX plastic pipe. I also can lay my hands on an ARC slanty intercooler. Any ideas??

Other mods are;
full decat
440 injectors
Uprated fuel pump
Map sensor off a '99 classic
Will be happy with 280-300bhp

Many thanks in advance.

I've been looking into this for a long time. I've got a very clean v2 sti type ra that I use as it was intended. I'm loathed to cut my front bumper however I'm affraid the performance of a front mount outshines that of a top mount. I wanted a Harvey hdi fmic but due to recent events ill be making do with a toyosport one. That aside it will be far superior to any top mount.

i went more or less in the same direction as you, and fitted the pre facelift sti intercooler to my car, it did make a difference, when i wanted more power i ditched the top mount and went for a front mount when one come available that didnt hang out the bottom of the of the bumper and didnt need the inner wing butchering to fit,
this is similar to intercooler i fitted mine was branded japspeed

Matt sending you a PM

Forget the faff of later TMIC's, your only real choice is the ARC one or a FMIC. Everything else is not worth the time effort or money

Safely I wouldn't push more than c.320-350 through it. The problem you have is det the warmer it gets

You are also restricted as to how much timing it can take. Through consistent road runs to the top of 4th you'll find you have to pull more and more timing do to the decreasing efficiency

This isn't to say it's not worthwhile, it's just to say while it's very good over the OEM TMIC it's still a small solution to a big cooling ask.

If you look at the design of the ARC you will see the far larger cooling capacity of the bar and tanks compared to the standard item.

Running 320 on 1.4 bar with pretty much maxed 440's and maxed green labeled maf I never saw det above c.25 on the road

Track use is under advisement and you stay out for as many laps as you dare really. 4 laps tops and I came in tbh.

As an aside, don't be fooled into thinking the STi slanty is any better than the WRX item. It's a myth ! they are identical, the only difference being the efficiency of the airflow do to the smooth Y hard pipe on the STi

i bought a zero sports undertray splitter the other day and fitted it for my wagon which is running 315 bhp on a slanty and after a good 20 min country road blast the cooler was still cold so i guess it was working to some degree and it felt quicker through the mid range for sure.

Easy to replicate although you would benefit from improving the seal between the bottom of the splitter to the I/C.

ARC's also benefit from suction sealing the scoop undertray to the intercooler I modded mine to ensure all the air that was making it's way through the scoop at high speed was forced through the core

Given your ZS is flat, I would use some thick draft excluder foam strips on the I/C lip facing up which used to encase the tray skirt on the standard item

I agree the arc is a nice upgrade for the slantys and one I also considered. Getting hold of a decent one however may prove tricky. I really do feel like I've exhausted my options regarding my intercooler but I just keep going in circles. Fmic for me. Like I said the arc is a great option tho
