Default Rebuild time (longevity advice)

The engine from my 53 wrx is now out and on the bench ready for the rebuild, as far as I am aware the only issue with the engine is the main bearings but there could be other problems.

What is recommended to be done while the engine is out, for example I have read about upgrading the oil pick up?

Are there improvements I could make while I am here (I'm not talking about putting in some forged pistons even though I would like to haha!)

What is the besk gasket set to buy? Is the standard dealer one a good bet?

Hi

Advice from me is get it apart & then see what you are dealing with.

Best bearings are subaru oem mains with Mahle motorsport big end bearings, I use that combo in all my engines. ACL are good aswell so you have many options, purchase a Subaru gasket set as you will get evrything you need for the rebuild, can purchase bit by bit but with the kit your cover'd.

Pick up pipe can break but once again have a look, depends what you want to do with the car after?

All the best & feel free to pick my brain anytime should you need any info.

Thanks for the advice, the oil pick up is currently fine. As is the rest of the engine it seems, the bores in particular seem in very good condition. Similar condition in fact from a block that has just been honed, heads also look perfect and far as I can see the gaskets were not leaking at all.

The bearings though are a bit munched but I've seen much worse, will be measuring the crank on the weekend and then ordering all the bits together.

What silicone type sealant is recommended for when I start reassembling it all?

Your cooking on gas.

Three bond grey sealent is very good or loctite do a assembly grey sealent.

All the best with it.

wow, who would of thought it would be so hard to order a full gasket set. Everywhere on google I go to can't seem to give me a end product to order. Closest I could get was ordering the bits individually.

Should I go direct to Subaru for this? Or anywhere recommended on here?

http://www.importcarparts.co.uk/part...en=&searchKey=

Ok this seems to be what I want.... I think?

The price seems high though... :S Its the full gasket set rather than just a cylinder head gasket set which doesn't appear on the website.
