Tapping noise not big end... Ideas thoughts
Hi all,
I have a Turbo 2000 on a x plate. Runs very smooth, however it has a tapping noise constantly.
It's not big ends, it sounds like tappets, kind of like on a old vauxhall. There loudest when cold but quieten a little when warm.
A local garage said it was piston slap.
So what I want to do is sort of disprove the piston slap idea.
Correct me please but surely piston slap like big ends would at a certain rev would sound like there is/was no engine problems? You know as everything is balanced.
With the tapping it never becomes balanced and you can here it at any rev.
Has anyone else experienced this before. I am wondering if the tapping is caused by a replacement cam I fitted to one of the heads. I bought the car as non runner and the bottom end from Scottish subarus. It was a good milage mcrae. When stripping the original engine I found one of the outer lips of the right hand exhaust cam had snapped away. So I replaced it.
Any thoughts would be good. I am going to drop the engine this weekend so any ideas prior to then for what I need to be looking for would be good.
Cheers
Mike

Hi Mick, going to sound an absolute newb, but no I didn't. How do I go about this? Is there a guide on how to do this would be good.
I guessed it probably was caused by that as the spanner markings on that came were looking like they had been abused.
Cheers.
