My oil was changed in August and it hasn't used any which is unusual to me, as my dad has put over 1 litre in his 2.5 topping up since his service in march!

Was going to say that does not sound like bottom end failure. Mine has gone and began initially by only being audible from 3000-3500 rpm then a little later up the rev range. Sounded like someone gently tapping the engine with a hammer. With the bonnet open those hammers get louder.
Does it happen while stationary and revved?

Could it be the water in the heater circuit? Try getting the bubbles out of the heater circuit.
