is it possible to make a standard sti make this sound when it flutters while boosting? is that what a vta can do? i know they make a pssttt noise but not sure what causes the flutter
Thanks
Thanks

Cheers for the replys my friend seemed to think its was a external wastesgate and screamer but he noticed scoobie turbos have internal wastegates, is this something you can change? I'm new to turbos so have no idea really

Well its running a rotated setup with external wastegate, guessing that coupled with no bov will do it.
With no dv you get the flutter noise which with an induction kit is going to be louder

Run no bov and you will get this fluttering,
It's basically the charged pipes when you come off throttle the throttle closes and the air has no where to escape, normally either through recirculating valve of aftermarket bov.
So only route out is way it came in, back through te turbo and out theninlet airfilter.
This is fine but there is a bit of a argument ongoing about wether its good for the turbo as it slows the turbo down very quickly with the back pressure, turbos with ceramic blades tend to be worst at risk of failure (well as said ongoing debate)
I ran both my drift cars without bov without any problems, but I'm not convinced it does the afm any good with air flowing incorrect way and screwing reading funking it with oily residue etc.
To enhance the sound a lot of guys use hard pipe from turbo inlet back to the afm to help resonate the sound.
Look up dosing on you tube, the yanks love it!! Even go as far as relocating the afm inbetween throttle body and intercooler!
Sounds cool on the higher run boosted cars,
Each to their own I guess

Watch the video, the flutter is on boost therefore not BOV related unless it's blowing open under pressure, yes mine flutters (open induction, FMIC and no BOV) but that's on lift off. It's the wastegate opening to reduce the load on the turbo therefore reducing compressor wheel speed and doing its job controlling boost.
Reason it's so loud is most likely due to a screamer pipe, be it on rotated or even std fit turbo.

my bad, miss read lol
re watched the film on pc and can hear it now, sounds awesome
^^^^ makes complete sense what everyone else is saying regarding external gate etc

I get this sound on my version 5 sti. sounds great on boost. mods are front mount, blitz nur spec r, devorced down pipe, induction kit, standard vf28 turbo running 1.5 bar and fueling mods, mapped by martyn at enginetuner to 343bhp.

Ummm, correct me if im wrong people, but that fluttering while accelerating is compressor surge...
Compressor surge is when the turbo is spooling but the engine cant consume all the air, so the turbo is slowing and speeding up rapidly and gives the chatter noise on WOT
Wastegates do not make any form of chattering noise.
Lift off chatter with no dump valve or a stiff bov is compressor stall (not exactly true but close enough) Is where the air feeds back through the turbo and is "cut" the wrong way by the blades of the turbo.
And mine does that exact same thing with a s206 and 500+hp with an internal wastegate

I agree.. fluttering on boost is usually compressor surge - which you do NOT want!
although I have heard some cossies making that kind of noise on track (also still on the power) but was told it was electronic boost control bleeding off pressure, which i guess must have been causing slight compressor stall on/off/on/off/on/off. think it was one of the enhanced performanced cars iirc.
