Default Petrol Leak from filler tube help

When ever i fill up with petrol (£10,£30 or a full tank) it seems that my car is dripping with fuel for about an hour after. its only a small drip but enough to stink the driveway out. Using a torch i can see its dripping from the very bottom of the filler tube where there is a metal clip. It must have been doing this un noticed for a while as it looks like the smallest amount of white petroleum jelly has formed where it drips from.

Anyone come accross this before? im hoping its not going to be a tank off jobby

Dirt gets inbetween the filler neck (the tube) and the plastic cover and it rusts through, mine started off as wee pin sized holes and grew to a proper hole and the petrol was pouring our as quickly as it was getting pumped in.
I had to replace the fuel filler neck and had some job getting the bolts out that attach it to the rear wing panel as the bolts had rusted and would not be drilled out and would not budge even with an impact driver and small sledge hammer, I ended up cutting out the whole section inside the fuel filler cover and then had to isopon it back in place after replacing the neck.

I got the neck from someone on here who was breaking their car and I asked if they had a neck.

You were using the wrong drill bits!

I got some cobalt drill bits, after killing a few others and getting nowhere, and some aerosol cutting oil. Went through them like butter.

I put a how to guide on beds and backs scooby about this... Very easy to do but the bolts are a nightmare to undo. I ended up cutting them out

I won't forget using a drimmel drill thing and having sparks!!!! Was a little scared as petrol fumes are worse then the liquid itself.

Default project

Thanks for all the replies. havent logged in for a couple of days so a bit of a delayed response ! I see so so it is a common pain in the *** then. I have a 97 uk turbo 2000 and i have recently earnt a load of money so i was gona trade her in for a newer model (Evo 8) . i have now decided that the old girl has been such a good reliable car until late and as she has now hit 160K miles she deserves a new lease of life. I always service her every 2-3K miles but i am going to further this with a minor restoration lol

my 12 things of XMAS
1. fix the fuel leak
2. fit my new wheels iv had sat around for a while now
3. Full cambelt kit, Water and oil pump with full service
4. Refresh the brakes with new discs and possibly better calipers
5. The cam and crank sensors have just been changed so i want to change the knock and maf sensor for peace of mind.
6. All the bush's throughout changed for poly
7. Replace gearbox due to whine in 1st and reverse ( its a ticking time bomb)
8. Step up to tdo5 turbo
9. Front mount intercooler
10. slightly bigger injectors and fuel pump
11. ESL ECU and remap when work is complete
12. Get paint touched up where required

Does anyone think i would be wasting my time effort and a shed load of money and i should just get the EVO ?
