Using far too much oil
Hi guys, I posted a while back about how much oil my 2005 WRX was using, seemed to calm down for a while.
I did a 200 mile journey 2 weeks ago, so i made sure my oil level was nearly full.
So, after that, and me driving to work and back, say 25 miles per day, i've covered approx 450-500 miles.
Oil was empty again this evening. Never see any oil leaks, sometimes it seems to hold then just vanishes.
Anyone have any clues as to what it could maybe be? New turbo?
Cheers, Paul

As far as oil consumption goes, some cars just do for example the wankel engine in which you should check the oil every time you fill up
But side note, when are you check the oil? After a few minutes or after half an hour when all has drained back in the sump rather than the sides of the block?

2.5 's are prone to ring land failure causing high oil comsumption. Not saying thats what it is , but genrally the 2.5's are known for using oil . In my opinion through the breathers

Hi guys, mines the 2.0 Blobeye Version.
Ground is as level as can be on the road outside mine.
I usually check it first thing in the morning before the car has moved.
Surely something must be a miss and this can't be general usage

I tend to agree with you, doesnt sound entirely normal. That is a litre in 500 miles. Perhaps a chat with an engine builder to allay your fears might be in order, we mere mortals will either wrongly put your mind at rest or scare the **** out of you!!

Does it not worry you? Have you spoken to anyone about it?

Yeah spoken to the people who built the engine and they said its fine, also last owner told me about it when i had it from when i had it off him. Its had 2 rebuilds and is using wossner pistons. i also get a fair bit of piston slap when cold but as soon as its warm its all good.
What spec is your engine?

Have the oil feed pipe from the sump checked out. My hawk has just had a rebuild after head gasket failure. Once it was run in, and the turbo was hooked up, they discovered a crack on the flange of the pipe. Its quite common amongst the hatch engines and was subject to a recall. The engine builders hadnt seen this happen on a hawk before. Its definately something to get checked. The part and labour was only about £50! Small price to pay. It's a good job my car was due in that day as it appeared to be a very recent failure

yeh that's the one. If you're taking it to someone who knows subaru's, the part i had replaced which could possibly be causing you problems is "oil strainer assy - part number U15049AA110". Obviously there's other things that could be casuing you issues, but its an easy one to rule out. Hope this helps.....

no signs what so ever, car drove fine. It was losing oil though. As i was running the car in, it had 2 changes of oil within 1000 miles so i didnt notice until the car was taken back in for final check. They only noticed the problem because when the oil was drained, and filled back up (i.e no oil in the pipe), it was drawing in air through the crack which turned eml light on. After a bit of trial an error to diagnose the problem, they found the crack in the pipe. Like i say, good job it was in for the work, as i wouldnt have realised and would of lost oil. Eentually, the crack wouldnt have gone around the entire circumference of the pipe and p*ssed oil out everywhere ~ potentially could have knackered my nice newly rebuilt engine.
Car has done about 45k miles.....

search google for impreza oil pick up tube and you'll see loads of info. Like i said though, there's plenty of reasons for you to lose oil, but really easy to rule this one out!
