This should help:

The Ericsson GSM Module GM 12 opens the door to a whole new world
of applications, making wireless communication possible between
machines as well as people. Providing the basic functionality of a mobile
telephone, the GM 12 sends and receives SMS (Short Message Service),
handles speech calls and the sending of DTMF tones.
Ease of integration
The GM 12 is controlled by AT commands via a computer or microprocessor
connected to the module´s serial interface. A wide voltage range
ensures flexibility in choice of power supply. Together with its standard
connectors, both integration and control of the GM 12 in an application
is very straight forward.
