Default Something cooking under the bonnet.

HI al

My impreza is a 2002 wrx lightly modified with a panel filter and cat back. Car has done 55k just to give you a background.

It was being driven on two occasions recently in 5th gear around 75mph and upon dropping into 4th and and opening up I have noticed the following. Upon stopping within 5-10 mins of the leg stretching and as its sat idling cooling down I have noticed a burning smell coming through drivers side air vent. My friends also noticed smoke coming from bonnet vent.

On both occasions I have lifted the bonnet and looked straight at the turbo with it being that side of car and from under the heat shield there has been a very light amount of smoke whisping off it. We are not talking a lot but enough to know somewhere oil is burning against the heat there.

Now this is where I am confused.

  • Boosts fine still and holds it.
  • Not using any oil (checked after first instance, will check again tonight).
  • No smokey start up.
  • Can not see any visible oil or leaks around turbo.
Has anyone ever had anything similar, or can put a dummies picture up as to where to check as I am technically retarded

Thank you

Probablly oil leak from rocker cover gasket.
Oil drips directly on the headers that's why the smoke and smell.

Check the Turbo oil feed connection on top of the turbo. The heat that the Turbo produces would instantly burn off so would be very hard to actually see a leak.

Have you wrapped anything under there...
some (many/most/all) wraps will smoke somewhat when newish n very hot.

just drive it sideways until it blows up, then fit a forged engine

but emmaroids car has the same smell and when i had a look under it i noticed the rocker gasket was leaking slightly so if the smell is on the passenger side i would check the gasket on that side first.

Its smoking from under turbo shield tommy. No wrapping anywhere viktor.

I keep spending to much time round chaps with 500bhp lexus at the moment and the scooby ownership days look like i might repeat history and jump from one to a straight 6 again or a v8 barge.

Grr decisions...

Hi, Sounds like the rocker cover gasket seal is leaking. Just had the same happen with mine, Smoke was coming from the drivers side and looked like was coming from the turbo, Smelt of burning oil. Replaced drivers side rocker cover gasket and problem solved.

I had the same problem 05 WRX. I had to change rocker gaskets on either side. make sure you inspect your car from top (moisture on either rocker cover usually a sign of gasket wear) and underneath with oil filter engine guard removed. There are 8 bolts on either rocker cover which have ore rings under them. Safely you should change those as well when changing gaskets.

Rocker cover gaskets do go on these, once you get the car up on ramps, or get under it with the undertray off, you'll be able to see where.

The reason it looks like smoke is coming from the turbo is that the turbo is usually so hot, warm air rises off it, sucking the smoke from below the car in a sort of chimney effect.

its me again another strange thing happens, if the car is left idleing for a long period ,as it was when i was try to trace the oil leak/smoke, when i then drive the car there are coulds of smoke from the exhaust, but once it clears its fine.is this the start of something more serious.the car has covered 65.000 miles full history.im am a jag mechanic by trade so the car is probably over serviced.
