Hello i think it may be battery related as my batt light flicked on and off a couple of times plus the stereo went off the needles flicked up and down a couple of times

but it did get me home from when it started doing this which is about 20 miles i also tried jump starting my bosses van this morning without success i thought it was the connections on my leads i have just had a look a the batt which i think is the original its a 2001 bug wagon and the green light is not there anymore so im assuming its the batt what reading should i be getting if i put my voltmeter on the battery terminals i cant remember its been a while since i have worked on my car and also thanks its a little boy too over the moon is an understatement as i already have a little girl cheers for the help!!

If battery is healthy, then the static stored voltage should be at least 12.66V.

But also test the alternator by checking it's voltage with the engine idling - should read between c.13.5-14.5V (just as for the above test, do this by measuring across the batt's terminals).

Is it just speedo and rev counter or all the dials, I changed my stereo and must have caught a wire and blew a fuse. Had someone coming to buy it and had no speedo or rev counter, checked every fuse but it was one behind the little pull out bit by your right knee. All sorted with half hour to spare and sold the car

Well I have been out in the car twice now only on b roads though and everything seems ok at the minute so I'm hoping that it was just a loose sensor on the alternator if it comes back ill write back cheers for the info again guys !!
