Default Good replacement for TD04

so then my TD04 is making a nasty sound when i hit boost then back off, not sure if its the turbo or the actuator, should know more at the weekend.

In the meantime, what would be a good replacement for the td04, the car is a 2003 blob WRX.

Please dont say a td04, as i will be looking at a remap soon, but want to keep std tmic and inj's, but dont want to push the std td04 to limits (had one before running over 280 and was hideous to drive was like a 2 stroke - on or off) so would like a turbo that will hit 290 or 300 tops but be nice to drive.

I did buy a vf34, but i sold it as i felt it would be overkill, plus with 130k on the gearbox i didnt give it much hope of handling over 300bhp.

Suggestions please

vf 35, or a td05-16g would probably be best

the 35 would be overkill mate, would the tdo5-16g be very laggy if kept at 300bhp?

my td05 made full boost @ 3200 with supporting mods. it was running 352bhp and was a nice turbo.

No mate just the vf28,plenty good enough for good low/mid range punch, with boost kickin in at 2700/2800 rpm and staying constant to 6100 rpm.Vf24 identical specs, but a bit older and different actuator & harder to find a good used one.

nice one cheers mate...

Shame i was led to believe my car had a full eng replaced at 50k, and not just bottom end as it turns out or i would have gone for this in the first place.. Oh well, live and learn

VF24 get my vote not many people mentioned it but it is a very good turbo with quick spool and with correct mods will make over 300 bhp and can be picked for less then 200 pounds

May be worth waiting till SC and I have tested their latest offering.
The SC30 Billet is a TD04 based hybrid with a Billet comp wheel and should make 300-320bhp with mega spool.
Price is likely to be £550+ vat on an exchange basis.

No disrespect Martyn, but he is after about 300 bhp , he could buy a hybrid td04 from a certain gentleman called Andy Forrest whose credentials need no introduction to his abilities as a mapper/ driver .
Failing that for £660 for a turbo to gain 300 bhp is not worth it IMHO, as he could buy a vf 28 ,ported headers & a lightened fly wheel for less than £500 and the car would spool up nearly as quick as a td04, with stronger midrange.
Also if I know Merlin ,he won't want to wait around,he will have wanted to get it sorted yesterday . Lol
