Default Classic cruise control

I have seen its an option on some cars, but can you get the bits second hand and if so can it be fitted easily??

Had it on my old car, and when on a long run saves the temptation to put your foot down.

A company called Rostra makes a universal kit that fits the Impreza.

But how does it work on a standard throttle, ie: not electronic.

The throttle on my car has room for 2 cables. The universal kit shows an actuator and a cable I imagine it just uses that. I wonder if you have to swap the cables around and there is a special mechanism so that the foot operated throttle doesn't move around whilst its working. That would be a bit odd! Classics could be specced with cruise control but was fitted by Subaru dealers not as a factory fit I am lead to believe.

Going from my last car which I retro fitted Cruise onto.

The throttle linkage had an extra clip and onto it went another cable to a control box, this had a sensor inputs from brake and clutch (to stop it), then a vehicle speed sensor, and then the switches to set speed (and resume cruise), accelerate (speed up) and decelerate (speed down) and also to cancel.

The good thing with my old Vectra was that the loom was already there so was only a matter of plugging in the new switches (Clutch and a 4 pin brake instead of the standard 2), and then mounting the box on studs on the chassis, so was a piece of pee to do.

Just wondered if the bits an bobs were the same to do, or if it was a lot harder?

Wouldn't mind it on my classic. The Mrs has it on her Toyota, and I use it whenever doing motorway miles.

I'd imagine it will be tricky getting the donor parts, I've not looked at the links above, but I'd imagine the more Legacy's would have them than Impreza's.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Classic cruise control fopr £40 here: http://www.car-breaker.com/view-part...84&pid=1348236 although doesn't look like a full kit.

This kit doesn't look like full kit,you will need actuators, control unit, command switch etc.

I'm sure I have some parts from my wagon, which has been converted to the manual and have before cruise control like control unit, command switch

Here is full instruction for Cruise control

It looks do-able, I wonder how much a kit costs and if the kits fit a classic.

Might do a bit of research here.........

Update:

Cruise control for Imprezas was made available via dealers for about a month, some years back.
When there were no buyers whatsoever, it was withdrawn, and is no longer available in the UK.

BUT: it IS still available via Subaru (Japan).

However, I have no idea how to contact them, and their website is all in Japanese, of course, so I can't even click on "contact us" and send a hopeful e-mail in English.

Anyone any ideas?

Always see if the breakers over there have any, or a similar route??
There has got to be a way.

Don't think you'll save fuel with the cruise control.
As the computer is constantly adjusting the throttle it can use more fuel on a run, particularly if the gradient changes frequently. You may not think it but our roads are not that flat at all, unless you live in 6 finger potato muncher East Anglia .

For mine, it wouldn't be that, it would be for the long haul down empty French motorways at 80mph, and through their built-up areas at 110 and 90 kph.
I often drive through the night and other cars are few and far between.

They are VERY sneaky with speed traps, and rob you, sorry FINE you on the spot too

Second Update:

Just spoken to Gary in parts at Proven Motor Company.

It's definitely NOT available in the UK.
Gary and a lad from service at the same place seem to remember it being a problem on the turbo cars when boost came in, since it works on vacuum. That's why it was withdrawn as not very successful.

I think I'll wait until someone who HAS one comes along and tells me it's OK.......
