Default Knock! Knock!

Have I got a buggered 02 WRX Wagon?
Have just driven along the road, can hear knocking coming from engine, driven approx 200yrds further over a roundabout, bunnyhopped off the roundabout knocking now sounding like the gates of hell were about to open. So dumped the clutch, engine idles, turn engine off, pull over.
Mr RAC man takes a look had me start it twice which (although sluggish) it did and idled fine but sounded like a bag of spanners.
Just looking for some ideas as to the culprit.
Thanks

definately louder at certain revs, on idle it is more of an odd clinck and general lumpy running, apply the throttle and then the noise becomes more uniform, increasing with the revs until roughly 3.5k revs at which point it becomes vaguely quieter.
The description of Clack Clack is absolutely bang on though.
