Gear box rebuild options
After 3rd gear deciding to resign last night it looks like i need a gearbox rebuild but have a few questions...
1 is it possible to fit type ra raitos 1-4 with a uk 5th? with the same rear diff
2 are the front diff's servicable?
3 do all impreza gearboxs have the same torque split? read somewhere wrx's are 50:50 and sti's are 35:65, dont know how true that is.
oh and its a 95MY wrx wagon

PPG is so expensive though, probably more than the car's worth! lol
dont really want to put a 2nd hand one in for exactly that reason, how long will it last? seems false economy.
any one know any decent gearbox rebuilders with good subaru knowedge?

I know that APi can make a hybrid box which is your gearbox but rebuilt with the ratios that the customer wants. However, I know a person who rebuilt an RA gearbox with the longer UK 5th (exactly what you want to do) as well as some newage parts but it cost him £1750! If I was you just buy an RA gearbox and replace the 5th with yours, or even better buy a V5/6 STi type R/P1 gearbox. This should only cost you between £200-£400 without a diff, not sure if you would need to replace yours though.
Hopes this helps,

Thanks lads, I'm in Ireland I'm afraid so getting one of you guys in uk to just re-build gearbox would cost too much for shopping the box over so I'll be lookin for a gearbox specialist over here, but thanks for the help.
API David thanks sorry not over your part of the world if I was I'd be over to you ASAP.
Option of getting type ra box and using my 5th wouldn't solve problem as I'd still have same ratio in 5th!

Point taken about distance etc. You will gain by using RA ratios and your fifth because the RA box is on a 3.9 Final drive front and rear and your WRX box is a 4.111.
You'll need to change the rear diff to match a GENUINE Ra box so that you have 3.9 both ends. That'll be a gain.
Good Luck, David

Ken, i was looking at buying a box and diff off uk300scoob on here, £400 and he is ireland.
Box is 45k miles off an 07 hawk. Think it came with clutch too.
Might be worth a look for you?

The 5 speeder off a Hawk WRX is a late model box with a press clutch and 4.111 ratios on the final. It won't fit a previous model Turbo car easily.
