Who to map
Hi I'll shortly be getting ready to have my car mapped
( 01 bugeye) standard ecu
But not sure which route
As I understand I've got 3 choices
First licenced mapping through appointed tuner
Second o/s mapping though a known tuner
Third get a tactrix and romraider + associated sensors software , wideband, ecu flash Ect ( ruling this one out really ) although I would love to have a play I'm sure it would go pear shaped at a rapid rate and not 100% you can do it on my ecu
Cheers tony

Hi Tony
If you have time and patience(plus some money for equipment will be helpful too) then DIY mapping is for you,but at least you must know how engine works...And best bet have look on RomRaider forum or OpenECU forum will be good too for start
If you don't have anything from above, for start for EcuTek you will be looking at £550 plus VAT,OS price ranging from £300-£350,both give you same result

Personally I'd get it Open Sourced mapped but pester the mapper to show you what he is doing.......then if you fancy there is the option of playing yourself LOL

It's not who to go for for mapping its more of which type and value for money
Ie is it worth paying £100/150 for licence and that's before anythings really been done
I've got , area 52 autosport 2 minits from me ( very helpfull chaps may I add ) and scooby clinic 20 minits , then rcm and the like in leicster half a dozen junctions down the m way so I'm not stuck for someone to see

If you want to tweak the map yourself in the future then it would have to be Open Source. ECUtek gives some nice extra features but your ECU calibration will become locked to whoever supplies the license.
I would ( and have done ) go open source and get yourself the kit needed so you can tweak the maps as required.

The idea of DIY is starting to appeal , from what I gather you can use somthing like ecu flash to save your original map in case of a **** up
Has any body got any advice on the best place to look or Who to ask , to go into DIY a little deeper
Best case scenario would be to spend some time with someone doing it

Yeah you can use ECUflash to read the original file from your ECU, you can then save this as a backup etc. Romraider or ECUflash can be used to edit your maps. Learning View is also used to check fuel trims and knock learnings.
Loads of info on the internet, Romraider forums are very good.

I'm getting pretty tempted with the romraider route
The only thing really holding me back is the lack of knowledge regarding the tweaking of a new map or existing map , ie afr , timing and the like , how do you learn or find out what these values should be or is it usually a given figure for various perameters regardless of if the cars standard or not
Example, should the afr for a modded car look the same as a standard car
I know it's not that simple but do you know what I'm getting at
Cheers tony

Yeah I know what you mean, it's only through experience that you would know what to look for etc. but everyone has to start somewhere. There are plenty of ECU files ( ROMS ) available on the internet that you can use to see what others have changed. You can download these and the software without needing a tactrix cable and see if it all makes sense etc.
A usefull guide can be found HERE which is a good starting point.

Excellent reading , had a quick scan through
Glad to see there's safe initial setting suggestions to make sure it don't go pop ( well at least not straight away)
I think I've made my mind up
Looks like I've got a hell of a lot of research and studying to do
I'll just take my time and take as much in as I can
Cheers chaps thanks for your advice
