Hey all!
I have recently bought a 1996 Impreza Sport 2.0L non turbo. All run's perfectly apart from two problems.
Firstly, it's began to jerk/judder when I accelerate or when it's under load. It feels like a misfire. I've changed the spart plugs over and this didn't remedy the problem. I'm wondering weather it could be the coil packs, does this sound like this could be the problem? Also, how hard are coil paks to change on this car?
Second problem is, when the engine has been run (i.e. its at running temperature) and i turn the car off for 5 minutes. Sometimes when I go to start it back up again, it doesnt fire. I have to wait awhile or bump the car.
Any idea's what this might be?

Hiya,

First one - probably the HT leads - had a problem like this before - new set - all sorted.

Second one - maybe because the fuel pump isn't primeing but don't quote me on this - there's better forum members than me will probably be able to provide a better answer.

Well, when I replaced the plugs, I looked at the HT leads and they all look fine. I did notice some corrosion on one of the plugs though, however this was sort of on the thread of the plug, not where you'd expect. I'm thinking maybe it wasnt sat quite right.
Is there any way of testing HT leads rather than buying new?
I just had a quote on a new coil pack, just shy of £100.
Before I make the perchase, anyone have any other idea's?

So i've just replaced the coil packs, and as far as i'm aware, it's still misfiring. well, when it's idleing anyway. havent tried driving it yet as i'm im still in work. any idea's atall as i'm supposed to be driving it 2000 miles next weekend to go to austria and back.

My old HT Leads "looked" fine but were shagged in the inside.

I would have done those first to eliminate the cheaper things first.

Have you tried an ECU flault code test and then a re-set ?

my mates turbo was doing the same turned out the fuel pump was dying check your fuel filter it may just need changng if not go for a pump

Mine did this take the plugs out and make sure the gaps are correct put mine right runs like a dream

Ok, so first thing I did was change the plugs. I made sure the gapping was correct, refitted and started her up. It didn't really make any difference. (this was on saturday). Since doing that, the problem got progressivly worse until it was virtually un driveable. Very low on power, and I was afraid to drive it atall. Sounded like a tractor. Then yesterday, due to lots of browing forums on the internet, I bought a new coil pack (inc VAT £118). I replaced this yesterday, and still no joy. I then noticed after I'd replaced it that I could see sparks coming from one of the HT leads that attaches to the coil pack (Drivers front). I decided to switch the cables over and hey presto, she runs like a dream.
Before I get too cocky I WILL be purchasing a set of new HT leads today, and replace all 4.
I don't know why but it seems that now i've changed these things, it seems more responsive when I plant my foot. Do you think changing that coil pack could have improved this, even if this wasnt my main cause or problem?

OH! I almost forgot, I ran a diag on it and it came up with Crank Position Sensor and MAF Sensor.
I took of my MAF sensor but couldn't see any problems, maybe it's time to buy a new one. As for the CPS, is this causing me troubles of starting the car when it's warm? If so, how do I get to the sensor to replace it? Is it a hard job?

Tried a 're-set' but could only find the black connectors under dash - no green connectors in site. spent about 20minutes under steering wheel looking for them and never found. If you could tell me where you found yours?

Hi

It's the black connectors you need to connect - this gives you the fault codes - to reset the ECU you will need to disconect the battery for about 8 hours - then reconnect.
