Default Engine light on dash

I had the engine warning light pop up on my dash whilst at 7000 rpm on the motorway yesterday, I backed off and it went away. Today driving very calmly the light came on again. Any ideas chaps?

The only thing that changed yesterday was that I fitted a new backbox and i disconnected the plug that makes that ding dong noise when the door is open.

Could either of these things have effected it?

What common things pull up that light.

No dont have diagnostic tool , my99 would it be obd 2?

yes mate obd2,

but i found out after buying a fault reader it wont talk to ecu.

had to go main dealer only .

evan tried the sealey reader and snap on ,they wont talk to car lol

hope this helps

seems to be my99 and 2000 only ,

i tried my reader on a 01 and it worked ok

Erm, read the code via the way it flashes? I did this for a faulty knock sensor/wiring.

Search on here how to do it mate.
dont need diagnostic reader, the car has self diagnostics built in via a blink code of the eml.

Look under your dash by drivers side footwell and look up at the steering column ,you should see 2 x black connectors and 2 x green connectors.They should be there hanging ,but sometimes can be taped up nr the steering column.
Get the 2 x black wire and join them together. Then arm your alarm ,then disarm it and turn your ignition on(dont start it up). You should see your 'check engine' light flash at 1 second intervals if everything is ok(mostly).If it flashes up several times count the no of flashes counting each long pause as 10 and each short one as 1(ie 3 x long & 2 x short will be 32 which is lambda sensor. Try this then post up your results.

7000rpm, on the motorway, what the hell were you doing haha, you probably hit max power at around 4500-5500 so no need at all to be going that high, where you in top gear as well? if so you must of been hitting some serious speed

I was in 3rd and was getting fed up with a Audi R8 up me chuff so just nailed it on a A road it runs out of puff at about 6500 but because its an auto I was waiting for it to change gear.

Thanks for the tips guys I will have a lookie today and see what I can find out.

Out of interest ,it is a td04 turbo on your car, as a 99 wrx has a vf 28 fitted iirc. Rev limit on a auto is 7100 rpm ,so you must have been close to the ragged edge .Td04 start to run out of puff after 5500 rpm.
