I went from EcuTek to Simtek on my STi 5. The on-the-fly live mappability meant that JGM could eek out more power, as he could remain more focussed i.e. on my 20g I went from 360 to 384 from the change of EcuTek to Simtek. Plus it allows 2 proper independent switchable maps and is MAFless! Which is handy on the MY99/00, what with their chocolate MAFs.

But hang on... As Simtek '2' is in the pipeline, with lots more goodies: the main one being on-the-fly igniton retard/advance to combat against potential det. Plus other features..

Brand new Simtek '1' is £1074 fitted/mapped (2nd map, if you want it, no extra cost!).

Don't forget you'll have to add £350 or so for the mapping to the price of the Apexi. And the Apexi still hold their value - you'll be lucky to get one (+ commander) for <£500 still. So yeah, a saving... But the Simtek a better overall product/newer technology etc. (worth the extra IMO).

BTW,

MY99 (Sep 98 - Aug 99) STi 5
MY00 (Sep 99 - Aug 00) STi 6

Cool then!

I still dig the PFC - with it's Commander.

Loved it on my previous MY93 WRX saloon.

Does your Applied model code (VIN plate on passenger turret) read "GC8F..." or "GC8G..."?

If F it's a MY99, therefore a STi 5. If G, a MY00 = STi 6

6s differ to 5s in that they have a front lip splitter and a different top section to the rear wing with a moulded-in, upturned 'guerney' to its leading edge.

If he's on a budget, then Syvecs a no-no - even dearer than the Simtek. But it would be the 'street' ECU of choice.

Its cosmetic, that is the only real difference between the 2 (and version 6's you need to engage the clutch to start the car, you dont on the 5).

Interesting - the original "Saabaru"!

You learn something new, literally every week on here.
