Which ecu and why for my 99 Verison 6 STi Import..

ive had apexi before and so far so good with them, i now have my 3rd impreza and looking to go for aftermarket ecu, what would ppl recommend. ( ie Apexi sim tek.. ) currently mapped on ecutek but in need of settin up soon with new mods etc..

joz8968 27 March 2012 06:31 PM

I went from EcuTek to Simtek on my STi 5. The on-the-fly live mappability meant that JGM could eek out more power, as he could remain more focussed i.e. on my 20g I went from 360 to 384 from the change of EcuTek to Simtek. Plus it allows 2 proper independent switchable maps and is MAFless! Which is handy on the MY99/00, what with their chocolate MAFs. :)

But hang on... As Simtek '2' is in the pipeline, with lots more goodies: the main one being on-the-fly igniton retard/advance to combat against potential det. Plus other features..

Martin 2010 27 March 2012 06:34 PM

got a funny feeling i wont be able to afford the simtek 2 lol ill be saving a little while more before i get either 2nd hand simtec or apexis lol

joz8968 27 March 2012 06:40 PM

Brand new Simtek '1' is £1074 fitted/mapped (2nd map, if you want it, no extra cost!).

Don't forget you'll have to add £350 or so for the mapping to the price of the Apexi. And the Apexi still hold their value - you'll be lucky to get one (+ commander) for <£500 still. So yeah, a saving... But the Simtek a better overall product/newer technology etc. (worth the extra IMO).

BTW,

MY99 (Sep 98 - Aug 99) STi 5
MY00 (Sep 99 - Aug 00) STi 6

:D

Martin 2010 27 March 2012 06:42 PM

i been offered a apexi delivered with commander for £375 already mate. lol

joz8968 27 March 2012 06:45 PM

Cool then! :thumb:

I still dig the PFC - with it's Commander.

Loved it on my previous MY93 WRX saloon. :)

mines a version 6 so must be september 1999 > im guessin so a my00... :S cheers for that info mate wondered how it was a version 6 on 1999 lol

joz8968 27 March 2012 06:54 PM

Does your Applied model code (VIN plate on passenger turret) read "GC8F..." or "GC8G..."?

If F it's a MY99, therefore a STi 5. If G, a MY00 = STi 6

6s differ to 5s in that they have a front lip splitter and a different top section to the rear wing with a moulded-in, upturned 'guerney' to its leading edge.

Ive heard good things about syvecs,
I did love my apexi pfc and commander in my old wagon too :)

joz8968 27 March 2012 07:57 PM

If he's on a budget, then Syvecs a no-no - even dearer than the Simtek. But it would be the 'street' ECU of choice. :)

mickywrx 27 March 2012 08:02 PM

The 4 fastest 30-130 cars at RAF Marham on the Sunday were all on Syvecs ECU's.......

BlueBugEye 27 March 2012 08:24 PM

Syvecs all the way for me.

Keep the ECUtek :) and if you must just add an AVCR :) Who is the current owner/mapper for the map ?

I have been wondering the same thing as a scoob im interested in buying says it is a V-6 but wondered how as its reg date is 01 Sep 1999 not 2000 that i thought the V-6 started at! If the above information is 100% correct then many many thanks as it answers my question :) :) :) :thumb:

Very useful info mate cheers! Its answered my question and glad to hear the car im interested in is a version 6 not version 5. :):) :thumb: Are there any other differences or pro's or cons between version5 sti and version6 sti on the type R?

TonyBurns 23 April 2012 05:36 AM

Its cosmetic, that is the only real difference between the 2 (and version 6's you need to engage the clutch to start the car, you dont on the 5).

Tony:)
